Default Postal Insurance - yes, no, maybe??

    Hey folks,

For those of you that send stuff overseas, do you insist on insuring them, and do you make the clients pay for it?

I'm starting to get more & more parcels to the US "disappearing" for a week or two longer than transit times suggest. While sending my boomerangs, the loss isn't that great so I just send a replacement at no charge, but now I've started sending pens & inks, it's a little more costly for me to do free replacements.

I've just added an insurance option to the checkout on my web site, but it means people have to chose it, and be willing to pay the extra cost, which almost doubles the postage to the US from $9 to $17.50 for a small parcel.

So I've put this option up, and put ina disclaimer that if you don't chose it, I'm not liable for items lost in the mail. I'd rather just insist that people take the option, as I don't like wearing the blame for the postal service stuff-ups, but then I'm forcing them into high postal charges.

    What do you reckon?

Australia Post commenced a little while ago a Registered Post package 500 grams, 1 kilo etc I have used the 500 grams for swaps they the PO claim 6 to 8 days delivery with a trace number as well, they also said said parcels were insured automatically for 100 dollars so check at your PO, by the way I have no idea how long your boomerangs are I was not around when they were handed out. (Joke) but it is ok for pens and similar like blanks.

    Have fun Peter.

    Thanks Peter,

Yeah registered in Australia isn't too bad, as it's only $2.75, but as soon as you go offshore, it's $8.45 or something like that, which is a significantly higher percentage of the total.

    Hi Russell

Registered post up to 500g to the US - $19.85
Air mail (no registration) up to 500g to the US - $14.85

Where you get stuck is, if your under 250g, then airmail to the US is only $9.05 but there is no Registered post for under 250g. That makes the registration cost $10.80.

I too have had lots of parcels take a detour via Disney Land and spend up to 13 days away on holiday before the eventually show up. But it only seems to have happened in the last few weeks.

Before that, parcel were only taking about 4 days to arrive in the US, quicker than items posted out to WA.

OK glad it's not just me, I suppose. I had one arrive today that took 12 business days, just as I was about to send a free replacement, instead of the 4 - 6 business days Aus Post quote.

I actually had one come back from France the other day, after being away about 3 months. But that was my boo boo, as I forgot the city & postcode line of the address - oops. I had howvever sent them a free replacement many moons ago, so was a surprise bonus for me from something I'd already written off as a loss, and a credit to someone's postal service that it actually came back!

    ROFL, good one.

So no real comments on the original question though. I've got the optional insurance on the web site now anyway, so I guess I'll just suck it & see.

    Russell.

PS - hmm, 3 months in flight. That'd be a world record for the Maximum Time Aloft boomerang event, smashing the current record which is about 17 minutes

Yep, when yhou get em in a thermal, it's like an albatross soaring. I actually lost one once that way. Threw it in a football feild and it just kept going up. I took my eye off it to avoid tripping over while chasing it, and when I looked up, I couldn't spot it anymore Could be still flying for all I know

As for distance record, to quality, it has to comje back and pass a line 10m to the right and left of where you threw, so could be a bit tricky standing there with a tornado passing by.
