Good quality Sierras?
Well I'm getting a bit of a rush of requests for pens, from people at work. One person wants me to make 6 Sierra's for christmas presents.
I don't like the badsic gold finishes any more, as they're all wearing off pens I've been using, and basic chrome is not good enough either.
So I was wondering what Sierra finishes people have used before that they find durable? Elegant Beauties may also be an option, but since I didn't have any made up I could show her. AUS or OS, doesn't matter. Which would you pick as a good quality Sierra?

Russell, kits with the Titanium/Platinum finishes I believe are a higher quality kit, the price is also much higher. Amos

My regular user is a black and gold ti sierra from Brett at Addictive. It has been my work pen for a couple of years, has some scratches where its been dropped a few times but after two years the plating is still going strong. I am also partial to the black chrome/gun metal ones that a few sellers have but can't comment on the long term quality of them.
CorbsIt's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

on the Chrome/Gunmetal ones that corbs was talking about the chrome seems to stand up fine however the gunmetal plating does come off, the siera is a nice kit but if you want the quality i would go with the elegant beauty, price goes up a bit bit that just gets passed on anyway
i will continue to make the siera as an easy to make cheaper pen, realistcally you only have one tube to drill, turn and finish compared to 2 tubes for the slims and streamlines
little bit dearer but turn them out twice as quick and generally get 2 pens to one blank
just my thoughts

My vote is E.B I use one for work every day and it gets a rough life and still looks good. Yes they are a bit more $'s but Worth the money I think.

how long does the gold plating usually last on pens, if used regularly?

I keep promising, but have yet to deliver, some pictures of a sierra and gpw executive that I have been trialling for about 9 months now to test this out. I will really really really try, over the next few days, to post comparison pictures between new & used so you can see for yourself.
Regarding suggestions to go for the EB, you can get both Sierras & EBs with titanium gold/rhodium/black titanium combos. I'm assuming the finishes should all be roughly similar quality, with durability being black ti least, ti gold next and rhodium most durable?

How long is a piece of string? Depends I guess on what you call regular use. Some folk use their pens all day in their work while others may only use a pen a few times a day but still call it regular use. I haven't been making pens long enough to answer the question. I have several pens that I use that I made and they haven't shown sighs of wear yet This is over a period of 12 months or so. Most of them are gold. I did have a problem with the black peeling on a sierra pen but the supplier quickly replaced it for me.
Reality is no background music.

Has anyone else noticed that Sierras have changed lately?
The 'neck' of the writing tip (which goes inside the brass tube of the blank) is now much shorter, and the transmission is correspondingly longer.
Wonder why???
Cheers,

Mate,
Brett has a bit of info on his site about the plating. Addictive Pen Kits I have been using using a lot of different pens and the platinum/black titanium is by far the best finish for durabilty for reasonably priced pens. All plated pens wear way too quick and you will get complaints.
