The unending question you have asked deserves a quick answer we all have our own ways of finishing all discussed on the forum. Try first the library and then research more widely Google finishing pens, gaze around other forums. Why not try the way for example Davids method before you go any further evaluate comment, where you live contact other pen makers visit members of this forum. Look at pens made by Les in Red Deer he invariably says how he finishes indeed how he achieves most postings.
Next you will want to know how to photograph your work, how to press, how to glue, how to turn, how to cut timber, where to buy, sell, cast, see, Get videos, books, research all purchases. Be aware of OH&S needs for safety etc.
Be assured Rome was not built in a day by everyone involved the same way, have fun on the way and enjoy great festive season.
Regards Peter.

Just looked up your activity and location in WA and I see you are already in good postion not far from some woodturning groups, you have visited Hazza (not very far from his wood group) ever more reason to use your already given knowledge first.
Have fun and success. Regards Peter.

Hey Ian,
How you prepare your blanks, and finish them, will depend on how you want them to look when you hand them to your clients, how I do my pens works for me, and how Les does his really works for him, Amos does it his way and they look awesome, You are in the same place I was a couple of years back, I am impatient and couldn't wait 3 days (or more) to do a dip method type of finish (though they look awesome when done right) and some of the wipe on poly finishes are beautiful, but still a bit time consuming for me. You will find a method that you like and will do very well I'm sure. Keep on doing the research, till you get where you want to be.
Good Luck

Back on subject, CA is fine for general timber blanks, but for those special timbers and other unusual materials you MUST use epoxy IMHO. Remember heat is also you enemy with CA, so any timbers with super tight grain on kits with little meat on the tube can also fail whilst sanding or polishing, due to the heat build up.
Finishing with 20 coats of thin CA gives a brilliant finish, but I find with those blanks that need filling, starting with thin and transitioning to thick is better IMHO. But the thick still needs to be put on in thin layers, not thick, or it will ripple.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new
