Question about WA timber??
Hi everyone, been away for awhile, for the wrong reasons Im afraid. My mum died fm a stroke.
But the question I have is, she lived in Norseman WA and as I was driving in saw the most beautiful gum trees. They have an amazing red trunk and when you touch them its like that have been polished. They feel really dense and hard (so Im probably going to be sorry!!
Does anyone know what they are, and are they any good for pens. Thought I would make one for Dad as a gift.
Thanks for any help

Hi Jenny, sorry to hear about your mum, I dont know what the timber is but sounds interesting, you can always test it by turning up a piece to see how it goes. Do you have any pictures.
Regards
Al .

Sorry to hear about your loss. Wish I could help on the timber, but I'm in the US
and don't know much of anything about WA stuff except what I learn here.
But I think the idea of turning one is good.
just don't get caught out in the forest at 3AM with a hacksaw..

I haven't worked with it myself but from what I have heard It's a very nice wood and reasonable to work with.

Sorry for your loss. Salmon Gum, is a beautiful timber and well worth using. Here's a link to info on WA timbers, Salmon Gum is among those in the drop down menu.

Sad news about your mum Jenny. Mt thoughts go out to you,
Was going to say the timber sounded like Salmon Gum. Was used as props in the mines and for firewood. Strog and durable. Very pretty trees. Nice stands around Norseman.
