Default Red Gum Cigar and a question

Some may recall the trouble I was having with some Red Gum for a friend some time ago. Well I put it to one side to come back to. Well it has been a time to tackle it again and this time I think I won. It is a Cigar and the wood had 12 coats of CA then wet sand and polish. Anybody had trouble with Cigar kits or is it just me? With the last two I have assembled the nib has been out slightly when it is positioned to be fully stowed. The tubes are the correct length, it is as if the plastic grommit in the mechanism end is too long (or at least by removing it and reducing its length i fixed the problem). Any ideas? Never had this problem before.

    Thanks

    Sturina,

Love the Red Gum and the finish you have on it. When you are turning the barrels do you turn them with or without a mandrel? If using a mandrel ensure there is no debris in the morse taper of the head stock. The smallest amount will not allow the taper sit properly causing it to go out of round. Over tightening the mandrel or a bent mandrel can cause the same problem. I use the no mandrel method and use digital calipers to measure each part and turn to that size. I know some also use micrometers as well. I hope this is of some help.

    Cheers
    Darren

That looks good, red gum is one of my favourite timbers, so much of it is nicely figured without having to search out roots, burls, junctions etc. I have made several cigars of late and had no issues with the nib sticking out, cheers, seriola

Thanks guys. Not having a problem with the fit though. Measured and all is good, just the tip of the pen sticks out the nib when retracted. Have fixed by disassembling the mechanism and shaving a bit of the plastic inside the mechanism that drives the pen out. Had it two Cigars in a row, both left the tip exposed by about 2mm. Perhaps I just got a couple of kits who tolerance was slightly out or poor construction at the factory. Fingers crossed for the next one :>
