I was looking for some special blanks to make a Cambridge set, and came across some I did not know that I had, purchased at the last Working with Wood show in Melbourne. Red Mallee Burl, it was fairly good to work with and thankfully no blowouts. I understand now what Cisco means that they are real eyecatchers. All I can say is "give me Red Mallee Burl". Hope you enjoy them as much as I did. PS the lesson I learnt is how much I had forgotten-- The larger barrel would not go into the blank, 33/64 is too tight , 13mm is too tight so the closest I had was 13.5 ml, and I used Epoxy to glue it in. What a stunning pair of pens, Amos! You've done a great job with that timber. They positively glow.

Amos, i have had that problem with the 33/64 bit also. But only on the Red mallee burl not on other timbers. Very strange.

I've been having that problem with every kit that takes a 37/64". Emperors, Imperials, etc... I just keep a set of Irwin Quick Grips handy and, after applying the epoxy, use the clamp to press the larger tube into place. On the bright side, I haven't had one come loose yet. I've been thinking it was my drill bit, but if you guys are experiencing the same thing, it must be a tube issue.

Beautiful timber and you've done it justice. the Cambridge/El Grande/Churchill is a pain with that top barrel. Beartooth Woods in the US now recommend and sell a 13.3 mm bit for it. Where the hell did a size like 13.3 mm come from?

Superb pair of pens Amos, absolute stunners!

Good use of a spectacular couple of pieces of red mallee.

Thanks for that one and all, As to the drill bits, I was wondering where I might get 13.2 or 13.3, will make enquiry tomorrow. Cisco, I never had any problems with the Emperors?! maybe I just used a bigger hammer?! Amos

Amos; I cut a slot in a piece of dowel, wrap sandpaper around it chuck it in my drill and sand it to size inside the hole of the blank. Works great for a nice fit.

Ah.. I just had the same problem with two pens .. 37/64 (even bought a new set of
DeWalt bits per Penpal's recommendation .. love them!) Thought I must have picked
    up the wrong bit.

measured the bit, measured the tubes.. they're not 37/64 !
I used a 1/2" bit and it worked better, still a little tight.
