    Default Redheart and Katalox

Here are my two latest. The redheart is on a Gatsby kit from Penn State, and the Katalox is on a Monet kit from WoodnWhimsies (both are Sierra clones). I do not care for the Gatsby kit at all. It doesn't seem to have a good fit at all, and the black part of the nib scratches super easy. I do like the center band on the monet kit, it is a bit different from the Sierra.
Both the Katalox and Redheart are cross cut. The Katalox was a lot harder to sand, and got really hot, very quickly. Used the CA finish.

Like the wood Rick, you turned them nicely. Katalox sounds like Catalyst! Amos

Those are two timbers I've never heard of either. Are they American? I like the kits. Just a modified Sierra I expect? Nice job on them.

Thanks for the comments. Katalox is a central american wood. It is said to be harder than oak, hard maple, or teak.
I have a wood store a half hour away that carries some nice wood, but I don't really like going there because they are kind of stuck up. They cater to the high end wood workers with the high end tools, and really don't care do deal with a measly pen turner. Lucky for me, they finally realized that they can sell the cut-offs of the bigger planks they carry. Anyway, I saw this Katalox and had to try it out and share the results with y'all.

    Default Rick

About 1985 I walked almost the whole length of Fifth Avenue in New York City and called in to the top wholesalers of material who only sold to the trade in Bolts of the stuff or huge quantities, I do believe they were mystified by the Aussie who had the guts to ask for half a yard of this and a yard of that indeed they entered into the spirit of the thing and I ended up with a real lot of top stuff for my dearly beloved for her quilt making these included rare African prints. Also in India mostly all sales people in material are men who were used to bull etc with woman did not have a clue how to approach that same Aussie Bloke, all I knew was the difference in Polyester and Cotton but that was enough to allow me to wisely feel the material and look knowledgeable, knocked them off their feet. All this trip as a result of a specialist Doctor Urologist quack who after sending a viscious tube with a camera and tweezers 50 feet into a precious tube of mine and pronouncing I had 3 months to live, so I went around the World via America for seven weeks, put that vet or quack out of memory by name until 2001 when he accidentally was chosen by my Dad to operate on him. That Operation etc had to be supervised by me since my Dad was losing it as he was in his 95th year. Why did I even believe the Quack well a mate of mine had the same symptoms they operated and he lived just one week. Also while he and the nurse fed the tube into me I looked up at the ceiling and said (they were looking at the inside of me in the TV) I dont see any fingermarks on the ceiling, they looked up and then I said there soon will be if you dont reach the end. Stony faces from the stuck up Doc.
I believe if you sought out a genuine bloke at the wood store and said you were looking for a highly desirable timber in small amounts and offered and the made a simple Slimline of it very soon the staff would knock you over in an effort to help you.Accidentally this has happened to me so many times in fact I related once about the fellow who using his C and C machine made me a custom built live centre in tough steel when it came to pay up time wanted just one of my beautiful pens ( his words).

If I seen a bit definite about how some things are trivial and some intensely moving well I have been there and done that with a lot of things, every day is a bonus, my mum said to me she liked to prick balloons and I do too I like to burst the bubble of misconception by taking the direct way of approach to most things.

Seems I have been too long winded in my reply maybe I should be saying. Great, top pen, good wood, etc would be quick and easy way out, seems the world dictated a reply with thought and consideration for others always especially with people I relate to.

Take care my friend have success in your wood searching indeed this applies to everyone on the forum.

    Peter,
Sometimes, you and I are of such a like mind, it is scary. I actually did take that approach a few years back. I brought them a brown mallee sierra, and a python cigar with the idea of sharing something they had not seen before, and asked for nothing. To this day, the still look down their nose at me. That is fine, their attitude can take nothing away from me. I walk into the store with my head held high, and walk out the same. For now, I will continue to spend a bit of money there because they have what I need, however, I think I found a place a couple of hours away that claim to cater to the "little guy". If that is true, they will have all of my business.
