Require Advice
Hi all you Pen Turners out there.
I have been turning for 9 or 10 years now and have done the usual things, bowls, platters, boxes etc and even adventured into Segmented bowls. Now looking for something different and have been looking at some of the work in the Pen Turning Forum. Some impressive stuff particularly those of Toni.
So, where can I get the basic requirements/methods for turning Pens is what I am asking.
Would like to dabble my toe in the waters of this delicate art if possible but do not know where to begin.
No doubt my current trusty Lathe, a Record CL2 will be too big but will wait to be enlightened on that front.
Many Thanks.

G'day Dusty,
I won't be of much use as to acquiring locally what you need as I am in the U.S., but I can say welcome aboard It is funny, you have been turning bowls and what not and want to venture into pens where I have been doing pens and want to venture into bowls.
I love turning pens because for one, it is less expensive, two, it is relatively quick, and three, it is easier to play with more exotic woods.
It is quite addictive though. Once you start, it is hard to slow down. There are some great folks here that are wonderful resources.
Good Luck,
Rick

Provided it runs true and will accept a morse taper, then it'll do fine. Given your 'resume' I'd say you already have most of the necessary gear and can get away with just a mandrel, centre-point drill bit, pen-mill and some kits to wet your toes.
Jim Carroll sells a pen starter kit for around $85- which isn't a bad price, but I imagine you'd already have CA, Shellawax, etc. and can supply & drill your own blanks, so it may not be the best choice for you. Then again, most of the dupe items would be consumables anyway...

Qbn Dusty
Carbatec Canberra, both owners members of the Forum Phone 62800620.
They also are very experienced pen makers and you can get a catalogue from them.
Send me a pm and I will give you details of the Pen Group within the ACT Woodcraft Guild. Some top pen people in Canberra from those that earn a living from it to casual turners, some members in the Guild have had or are using the lathe you mention. At the huge shed in Lions Youth haven Farm the club has every tool to test and show, there are true experts on segmental work of the highest quality.Being of mature age it may interest you that the shed is open two days in the week for activities and advice, they now have a substantial supply of timber to play with.
