Default Retail price V's Wholesale price?

    Morning all,
I may be in the situation of needing to figure out a wholesale price for my pens. My retail price is the standard 3 x cost but how do you figure out the wholesale for bulk/regular orders? Do you calculate at 2 x cost or 2.5 x cost or is there another method to calculate price?

Can be a tricky one corbs. Your basic premise fits in with the usual retail markup of about 50%, but your reseller may not operate that way. Maybe have a chat to them, see what they are going to sell them for, and how much margin they expect. After all, if they are going to sell them at a much higher price then you should share in that too. The retailer should not be making more than you do, in my opinion.

    hiya Corbs

is the customer going to be buying them outright or will you be putting them in on commission basis???

i do commission with 6 people and offer them 20% and they sell at my price, this way my price is the same wherever people see them, and i can go in and replace the whole lot to keep new items on display

i decided a while ago if a shop wanted to put them in and buy them off me outright i would give 33% discount on my price, which its then up to them as to what margin they apply

i price my pens at what i think they are worth, some i get more than 3 times, other less

    i hope this helps

I have been approached to do some pens and other bits for a local establishment and they expect around a 100% markup.

if someone wants to buy my pens to on sell, i still offer them 33% discount on my selling price, after that they own it, then it's up to them to work out their price

and they need to make a minimum order as well, the amount of which is up to you, 6, 10, 12, 20, not 1 or 2

Thanks for the feedback team. At least I've got a starting point now to work from.

    Hi Corbs

are you buying your pen parts retail or wholesale?
If you're moving into wholesale supply, then you really need to be ordering wholesale.

the other way to look at it is -- at 3 x cost, what are you paying yourself per hour after overheads and no recovered costs like sand paper and turning tools?

At wholesale, you should still be making a "reasonable" return for your labour -- even if the return is mostly beer money

    As purchased stock.

I should be able to make it work as the volume should make up for the discount, well that is the theory anyway.
