The Royal Wave *OT*
Hi Folks,
Just got a notification on one of my old threads, which reminded me I've been a pen turner in absentia for almost 6 months. So I thought I'd better stop by and let you know I'm still alive & kicking.
Seems RL always commands my attention in the first half of the year. I'll spare you all the boring details. I think I've made a grand total of 1 pen since I last posted, and it was a PITA it was a kit I've used before that's given me problems previously with the cap thread separating after being assembled. 3 kits have done it so far..I have pots of glue hardening, polymer clay slowing baking itself, and 20Kg of PE Resin trying to decide how long it's going to wait around for me before settling down permanently.
Hope you're all having lots of fun. Can't see my situation changing fo a couple months yet, but hopefully I'll be back eventually. If not, expect a big garage sale from me at least

Good to see you are still with us Russell It's hard to fit everything you want to do into a routine sometimes. Hopefully you will be able to fit a few more posts in on the forum in future

Eh, don't talk to me about the weather. We had a heavy frost Monday morning which seems to have busted the pipes on our hot water solar panel. I noticed when it sounded like the tap was running..... in the downpipe
To cut a long story short, No company warranty (despite the fact it's supposed to be rated for sub-zero temperatures and less than 3 years old) or local repairers, insurance won't cover it, no local plumber wants to touch it, $1500 for a new panel is best guess, but it may do the same thing next frost, or $5,000 for a completely new system which is supposedly better in cold weather.
But, at least there was no water damage, and we can still use the system on regular power. Just means our $120 a quarter power bill will now rise significantly.

I hear ya Russell. A newborn baby means that the lathe gets neglected a little, so I've got to make the most of the little time i get.
It's taught me that I can make a quality bowl in half the time I used to, so it's not all bad news

Good to hear from you Russell wondering where you had got too. I hope you get back into it soon and I don't want to see any kit up for sale.
With the solar there should have been a blow out disc fitted. Make syre when you get the new one that it is fitted. That way the disc blows but all else stays OK. Much simpler repair.
