    Default Rustins Plastic Coating

The rustins plastic coating is a 2 pack mix witha resin and a hardner mixed 4-1. It is a very thin mix and will self level. It is a wet on wet application. Put one coat on then an hour later another coat then an hour later another coat and so on till you are happy with the finish.

Tiger there is now secret way in applying the Rustins Plastic Coating.

I use a brush that the ladies use for folk art with very smooth bristles.

Keep the liquid runny by adding a touch of the thinners , because if you let it get thick it does not self level as well and you will get brush marks.

Lots of thin coats is better than a couple of thick coats.

Remember to do this in as clean an area as possible and well ventilated. I do it in the kitchen after tea as the house is usually a lot less dust free than the shed and you usually have a fan in the kitchen to get rid of the fumes.

Depending on how the finish is going on 3-7 coats will be fine.

Leave for 48hrs to fully cure.

Thanks, Jim. I noticed that the applications did go on a bit thick and it's now been 24 hours since the last one, hope that I can smooth it out with some fine wet and dry.

When you use the wet and dry add a drop of dishwashing detergent to the water as this helps it slip over the finish better., acts as a lubricant.
If it gets too dry it will drag the finish then the only way out is to start again.

Hmm, I wonder if I could use the self leveling epoxy that is used for bar tops to achieve the same effect. Would have to adjust the proportions which would affect the dry time I think. Might have to play with that one soon.

Thats the Mirror Coat from System 3 Epoxies...fantastic stuff, but a pain to get on a pen because it tries to level out...and you cant dip the blank into it beacue the remainder of the mix will harden before you used it...so you have to make small batches of it as you go...but the finish is real pretty when you are done.

That's a very nice finish on those pens. Very impressed. I will have to give that a try.

    Is Rustins available at Bunnings?

    Cheers,

Yep, that's the stuff I was thinking about using. Just used it last night as part of an inlay on top of a bottle stopper. I hadn't considered how fast it would dry out after mixed though....

Thanks again Jim for the detergent hint, that helped with the smoothing. I've done something wrong however because the burnishing cream had no effect on the work. Are there any tips on how to apply the cream?
