    Default Sealing bullets

Ok then... for those who do bullet pens, what do you seal them with? I tried Dulux Spraypak Quickdry Clear Gloss Enamel and am not real happy with the result. I sprayed them inside a small box inside so dust isn't a problem but the finish is spotty and uneven. Any tips/hints from out there?

Corbs, you'll find that with the Dulux Clear Enamel (or most other clears) the brass will tarnish underneath fairly quickly.

You need a clear finish especially designed for protecting brass, it contains an inhibitor (from memory Sodium Benzoate, but not 100% sure).

Wattyl used to sell this finish in spray cans.

Make sure the box you spray them in is not too small, you're liable to get bounce back from the walls and by the time it hits the film again it is drier than the film and gives an uneven finish.

Your other alternative is clear powder coating, either commercially or a home job. IAP has a bit of info on this.

Thanks for the headsup Big Shed, will do a bit more looking next time I am in the Big B or similar. Will look into the powder coating but am guessing it will be outside my $$ range at the moment.

Hi I use an auto lacquer 40% 60%thinners. Then dip pen and hang up to dry. Normally one coat but have done two then polished using PlastX. No orange peel that you can get from spraying.

    Pasho,
I like the simplicity of your system too so guess I have a bit more shopping to do.

    Corbs,

I just use incrylac from Bunnings and put a piece of dowel in the end and a quick spray, only had problem when I tried to apply too much at once.

If you're serious about sealing pens (& other metal fittings) then you really want to look at something like this!

Seriously. An "HFSD clear" or "clear matte" powdercoated finish will last longer than the pen mechanism. All you need is the starter kit (see link), a compressor & access to an old electric oven.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.
