    Default Segmented Slim

had a bit of a play tonight

i have a heap of slimline components in a box that have been sitting there since i started making pens, i just don't like the them at all

well after tonight’s little play with segmenting i think they now have possibilities

the pen is made from coconut palm, walnut, icy pole stick and aluminium from a coke can – if you look hard enough you may even be able to see a faint hint of red on the edge of the aluminium

finished with 6 coats of medium CA

    thanks for looking

I am a bit like you with regards slims hehe, but looks like you can still come up with a different slant on them lol. I tend to use slims as a basis for my bullet pens they sell much better generally , when doing the slims like you have done without a centre band I tend to use a slightly longer tube for the nib end ,seems to balance it slightly better ,nice work though on what you have done with this one , cheers ~ John

    Thumbs up

    Well done Mik!!

Don't understand why the humble Slimline gets such bad press from so many people..

It is a pen on which you can test all your skills and your imagination. The same with its bigger brother- the Streamline. Look at the wonders Penpal performs with these two kits>

    thanks for the coments guys

artme - i love the streamline kits, they have that bit bigger center band which allows just that bit more meat in the hand

i think maybe we should have a slimline challenge on the forum, they are cheap so anyone and everyone can enter, i wouldn't even offer up any prizes, well apart from bragging rights of course

what does everyone else think and how do we organize it???

    awaiting your thoughts everyone

Not sure what you get for kits over there, but I know that the kits get the bad reputation..
not necessarily the pens. Could be because the kits are so inexpensive and the first place
they seem to cut costs is in the quality control. Low quality platings over brass parts that
haven't been properly cleaned or prepped.. (shouldn't even have been plated yet) and the
transmissions can be hit-or-miss. Same with the refills, I usually discard them right away.

It is too bad that so many people start with the slims .. they're not the easiest kit to do,
so there's potential there for new turners to get frustrated and quit. But I guess when you
are doing your first pen and don't even know if you'll enjoy it yet, price is a factor..
