I set up my first lathe a week ago and here is my first pen
Here is my first pen. It is African Ash from Carbatec. It is only sanded to 220 and no finish because that's all I have in the shed. I'm pretty happy with it for a first go and only the 6th bit of wood I've ever had on the lathe.

Looks good to me.
Now your on the slippery slope, more expensive pen kits.

Thats your coming year sorted out (I can see it in your palm), lots of turning....

I gave it to my wife and she has been playing with it ever since she got home from work. She covered it in candle wax and gave it a good buffing.

Thats looks like a great first up effort & as Amos said keep it safe, in years to come you will be able to use it as a guide to show how far you have progressed.

Top first effort. Nice shaping of the 2 sections, and the fit looks very good. My first pen was very straight with no curves.
You should be proud.Dallas

For a first pen it's a ripper shape, finish and fit all look good. As was mentioned above be sure to keep it and refer back to it in a year or two its amazing to see how your work progresses with a little time.
Keep sharing your work too.
Cheers
Tony.

Looks great That is very well turned for a first pen. You just need a few little odds and ends to start putting a finish on the pens. Candle wax might have been a good idea as the sweat on your hands donesn't take long to stain the timber. Great work

Definately on the right track , Slims seem to be in the main an "apprentice" pen, once mastered it is the foundation for almost all other pens roller balls fountains etc , not the easiest but very versatile ,can be shaped in many ways ,bumps lumps grooves and other things in the end a classic pen . Finishing comes in time ,from glow, canauba wax, Blo (Boiled linseed and CA) CA ,and various other finishes ,wipe on poly ,dipping in lacquer etc, in time you will decide what works for you ,so a journey of discovery still to come hehe ,in the main pen turning is very basic, materials and finishes are unlimited ,always something new to try so never boring ,enjoy the Journey Cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

for what its worth, i would guess that most first pens are acquired by the female of the house never to be seen again
