Back In The Shed....FINALLY!!!!
after 3 trips to melbourne in 1 week, great holidays, i finally found out what i am allergic to - Epoxy, so no more areldite to glue my tubes into the blanks, i did previously try superglue but found that the burls were not sticking properly to the tubes creating blow ups, this was just the thin stuff, so now i am trying the thick stuff, what does everyone else use????
this alergy encompasses anything that is epoxy, paint, resin the whole epoxy lot, just touching it will give it back to me again so i have to stay well and truly clear of the stuff
now for the fun stuff, got to play with lots of bits
PENS
Siera - Buckeye Burl
Siera - Buckeye Burl
Elegant Beauty - Spalted Crab Apple
Elegant Beauty - Molten Metal Resin
Executive Siera - Golden Watle
Executive Siera - Osage Orange
all wooden pens are finished with 6 coats of medium CA and 6 coats of thin CA
also made a number of confetti oil lamps from different woods - Red Gum, Silky Oak, Huon Pine, Camphour Laurel, Black Heart Sassafras
the confetti oil lamps are the first things i have turned on the lathe that is not a pen, very entertaining and i think i will be venturng a bit further a field now as well, just have to find somewhere with a selection of turning blanks
a mate pulled his vegie garden apart and i grad all the redgum sleepers, it was a bit of work to render the bits usable but there is some great character in it, not to mention a great price - FREE, well actually a confettin oil lamp
all in all its good to be back on the lathe
look forward to your coments

Thanks RP
the buckeye that i have is unstabilized which makes it very soft, i used a sharp skew and just went very gently, it turned nice and every piece tells a different story, it is one of my favourites pity we dont get it in OZ

Try the "Vise" glue available from bunnies - it is one of those polyurethanes (check spelling) - Brett from addictive put me onto it. works well with timbers - sort of foams and fills the gaps.
I'll look after the cocobolo if it's not wanted
Oh and I'm pleased that you've worked out the allergy. but it's a bit of a bugger that it is a glue and other stuff we all use regularly. Does it also mean you cannot use the resins to cast stuff?regards

Well looks like you're making up for lost time.
I was going to suggest Polyurethane glue as well, but not sure if that's the same class as Epoxies or not. Otherwise I gues syou could try and find an old horse somewhere...
Sorry about the allergy. Wonder if there's anything else in your house that will give you grief?

Nice batch of pens... have you tried polyurathane glue? Its moisture activated and foams to fill voids. Have had very few failures with some pretty temperamental woods since starting with it and you can get a small tube of it from bunnies. Oil lamps are nice too

It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

thanks guys
it is only epoxies that i am allergic to which means anything that has epoxy in the name, paint resin laquer, glue, it is amazing really the precautions that you should use with the stuff according to the dermotologist, 99% of all gloves offer no protection from epoxy and you should wash your hands in alcohol (no Rum Pig not that sort of alcohol) or acetone after using it, good old soap and water just doesn't cut it, not to mention wiping your hands on your pants does nothing either
when i mentioned cocobolo to her she was amazed that she actually found someone who had used it, she heard all about it at a conference the week prior, and she was very happy that i had a few scraps that i hadn't sent off
thanks for the tip on the glue i will get some and give it a burl, don't think it will cut it with my arrows though, i will have to get a mate to glue the points in my arrows for instead
polyester resin is fine to use which is what i have been using, and cocobolo from what she said will get to you if you don't treat it with respect
lots of intrest today in the oil lamps, i have a tag on the front of them which says "Citronella Oil Lamps", the mozzies around here are bad news
thanks for your replies just got to get rid of these spots and all will be great
