Default Shout out to Peter, (Penpal)

Who sent me a box of wood blanks last year in the pen swap.
Included in the "crate" of wood blanks was a piece marked "Red Mallee".
Kinda plain looking, had a lot of sap wood, somewhat pink tint.
Well, surprise to me...turned it round last week to see what was under the plain exterior and...

    guess what was hiding inside.
Guess I should learn to trust talent in wood choice when it comes from someone like Peter.
So, the Colonial red gum should be just as surprising, yes?
    Thanks Peter...
By the way, my wife took off with this pen yesterday, it is locked in her desk at work, so I will never see it again!

    Ed,

Never underestimate red mallee mate over time after cutting it can be a test to turn but rarely boring, it is getting rarer. Thrilled to see you having fun and not at all surprised SWMBO was so quick off the mark after all a happy wife and all that.

I am quite amazed at my stash wasprompted to have a peep at some of the thousand blanks in this room first onesI picked up were Poplar Box Burl in a bunch, Waddy Wood heavy and hard as with sapwood from outback Australia and then I stopped, believe it or not I really get a thrill out of beautiful grained timber.

When things settle down including the weather (spring is picking up) next pen I show will throw in a couple of pics of our Floriade here in Canberra opening soon.

Inclined to think your way turning one piece pens but I have many hundreds of Slims with Streamline bands yet to do. I redesigned my Hex machine and plan some ideas, bought some gear at the Working With Wood Show beginning of this month assembled it all this week keen to go.

Thanks for your kind words. Regards Peter.

There is a piece of "cork tree" in there too...so light it's not funny.
Think I will do something with that too.
Like you, I have so many wood blanks I almost can't keep track, just found a lost box of mesquite burl blanks I cut up 3 years ago, then put up so I wouldn't loose them...and promptly buried it under another box!
