Many sided Huon Burl
Recent mods to my design penmill also provides quite a workout for me using the totally heavy X an Y axis table. I am between the devil and the deep blue sea with fine adjustments for top accuracy and ease of winding (I always err on accuracy).
So here I was winding backwards and forwards left hand and back and forth with the right arm doing the work.
Always get a kick out of fitness fanatics running everywhere when all I have to do is make a few pens this way.
Huon provide me with my first pen and has me hooked as a positive timber in every way. There were many inclusions in the bottom half that cut and turned out all the fun in making trying to determine before hand.
Kind regards Peter.Nil Desperandum

Peter my friend, outstanding amazing, brilliant, respectful and wow. You have an affinity to Huon don't you, Red Cedar is mine, it was my first pen I successfully completed. The design is brilliant simple and understated for the amount of work that was used in the making of the pen. I have an American Vermont router lathe will have to do something with it one day.
There is just something special about the glow that is within the Huon Pine, the birds eyes in the top half of the pen are fantastic, it is a shame you lost those features in the bottom half but does not take anything away from the pen at all and the finish is subtle and respectful to the timber. Another masterpiece my friend.
Regards
Darren

hello Peter, keep at it, looks great , Bird's Eye Huon usually does, but your design and workmanship make it look better, Amos

Nice work peter ! Love the pen. Question as I now have a pen wizard myself how much timber you leave above the bushes , and also how do you finish sanding and poilishing them as I'm only starting playing with the wizard ?

Hey Peter,
Beautiful Pen there Mate,
I'm with Troy, how do you sand and finish once you get it to Shape ??? is there some extra hand work needed, or does the Pen Wizard have some attachment??
by the way, have a look at my signature

Thanks for the encouragement. As for finishing the only thing I do is take the sharp edges off the facets, always give a coat of CA then Polish and buff with my mini buff.
Aso I am not happy with the Pen Wizard until I modify it still further it is wobbly in the worst way for accuracy. This was made on my Design Pen Mill and the lathe.
The mini buff was a laboratory stirrer in a former life and has variable speed and sits next to the lathe on a raised Pipe stand.
