    Smile Silky Oak ?

    G'day everyone. I've been offered a slab of DAR Silky Oak, measures 900 X 500 X 50mm thick, for $50.00. As I still have the 'L' plates on for turning, I was just wondering if this timber would be any good for turning pens etc out of. The old fella next door, who is an experienced turner said Silky Oak is not much good for turning. What do you guys reckon ?? Cheers from Cairns Australia.

    would be good for clock faces , small bowls , pepper grinders and so on , and you will get the pen blanks from the off cuts .

    Hey Pariss,

    The old guy is right that stuff is Shyte to turn, send it over here and I'll use it in my BBQ ,

    No Seriously, there is nothing wrong with it, You should be able to get some nice sized platters and little bowls out of a piece that size, and yes a few pens, any of the Oak species are beautiful to turn, they always present well. just be careful turning edges as they tend to breakout on the end grains a bit, have Fun

    Talking Thanks fella's

    Turns out these Silky Oak slabs are over 30 years old, and belonged to an old cabinet maker who was saving them for something special. The Grand Daughter has ended up with half a dozen large slabs, all DAR and carefully stored for all these years. Might get a several of these slabs if they are as good as they sound. Spose $50 a slab is OK ?. Thanks
