Default First Slimline to Nouveau Sceptres

    Gooday all,

Merry Belated Christmas, still in the festive mood i hope.

Anyway these are some of the pens that i did over the past 2 weeks. Been in this hobby for just over 2 months and boy have i come a long way.

    Enjoy the pictures!

From my first slimline in bocote, which took 4 hours! Was terrified of the lathe and did everything at 500rpm. but eventually when it was actually done i just kept staring in awe....

    To this,

What a difference eh? with walnut and birdseye veneer. i kept trying to use CA glue to glue the barrels but always came short and thus screwing up the pen... Learnt to be patient and use 5 min epoxy instead. The cap was made by reusing the extra amboyna wood i had with veneer.

This pen became a family heirloom.

Others i made in (From top) Amboyna Burl with Sapwood, Buckeye Burl, Blackash Burl and Spalted Tasmanian Sassafras Burl.

Will upload more in the future.

Any other pen kits you would recommend? I'm eyeing the Jr. Statesman.

    Cheers,
    Freddie

Never did hear the sequel to your Lathe purchase but I can presume you cured that cause here you are producing drop dead pens. From that first beautiful Slimline onwards I can see great talent and excitement for you. Must be the Tiger Balm used for the finish (just joking). Seems like for ever ago I visited Singapore to buy and bring home Tropical fish namely Discus such was my passion for the hobby.

We have so many honest dealers in Pen and Timber supplies here in Australia I would be glad to list them on a pm if you request this info.

For now I want you to know you received and made best use of the outstanding timbers shown in this post I wish you continued success.

    Regards Peter.

    Freddie,
That is an outstanding progression in pen making. You didn't even start off with a basic design for your first Slimline like most people do. From there you have jumped in to the more elaborate kits and done a beautiful job on them too. Love the woods you used. I thought good wood was hard to get in Singapore.
    Again, well done!!!

Excellent pens Freddie, you certainly jumped in the pen making business, from a Slimline to the high end kits.
    Well done.

    Hey Peter,

well i was into discus too but frankly got really tired of them, having to change their water ever so often and if you don't they'll suddenly be stricken by some disease like velvet or hole in the head.

Ever visited chai discus in singapore? Sell's exhibition grade discus for around $120 ea, fully grown and even paired. i have a few.

    his website as stated here,
    ~Welcome to Chai Discus Farm~

Pen turning - well if im tired i can rest and the machine doesnt die.

haha, ironically i've tried many different finishings, from lacquer to oils to car polish wax.

Tiger balm is cheap around here... and amazingly effective. You would imagine that in such a hot country they did invent something to ''burn'' your muscles.

Yes the timbers i got were from the best sources i could find, namely burlsource, very happy with their timbers... Nice and thick. Not to mention the excellent service. American timber solved, now im setting my eyes on Australian wood.

    Cheers,
    Freddie

    Hi,

i got a little crazy there and decided to give it a go, too bad i didnt have a polishing kit on hand and the slimline was finished with car wax.

After that i actually jumped into 1 Sierra, 1 Bullet Pen and then to the current pens shown above - Desperation i think, Xmas was coming and i had to make a gift for my beloved father!

Wood is very hard to come by in Singapore, sadly the woodworking community here mainly consists of a handful of people and termites.

Jokes aside, they do have wood shops here but not specialized ones like Pop's Shed or Carrolls. Selling Medium Density Fiber, plywood and such... mainly for cabinetry - sad but true. The biggest craft shop here is called Art Friend and even so, they only stock Balsa and Bass Wood priced at an Exorbitant sum.

Shipping is a killer! If the wait doesn't, the bill will!

    Cheers,
    Freddie

Yes, but when i got a few penkits from a source that i can't name, the fountain pen kits came in in horrible shape, parts squeaked and it felt unrefined. And i sat there telling myself, NO wonder they were going cheap! So now i've learnt to take a step back, read reviews online and order only a few at a time.

Parents recently went to Pop's Shed in Melbourne, not bad at all! Received a few items from them, very impressed with their baron fountain pen. should see me ordering from them soon.

    Cheers,
    Freddie
