i only sand to 240, with the lathe on and also length wise
i apply a BLO/CA finish and never use accelerator with the lathe speed at 3000rpm
i give 8-10 coats of medium only and give a final sand of the top 4 MM pads
buff on a cloth wheel with a white compound designed for polishing Aluminum, i find this stops finger prints and i use this on all my pens before assembly, resin and acrylic included

i am not saying that i am right and everyone else is wrong, but what works for one may not work for the other

the more different ways of doing things the more chance you have of getting one that works for you

    i hope this helps

I recently started doing CA finishes like Les and must say that I am very happy with the results. I think allowing the CA to cure for 24 to 48 hrs definately aids in getting a quality finish and is something I have also been doing of late.
