Sn gents
Here's a couple of SN Gents I made in Eucalypt Burl and finished with CA that I made for a surgeon who recently saved my mother's life by diagnosing a critical problem and operating about 12 hours before the condition would have killed her. She was mid-diagnosed by another doctor. Damn fine surgeon this one I hope he likes them. I have bought a presentation box from David at Timberbits to go with them.
I must say too, thanks for the advice on photography. I used the best tent of all as advised - outdoors on an overcast day.

That's from the same block of burl I gave you the cut from Neal. It somes up beautifully with CA and then a polish. I have been using Canuarba polish as a final. It actually looks a bit lighter than the photo but that might be my computer screen.
An absolute bugger to turn. When you get your new gouge/cutter a tip is not to turn it as much as you would a non-burl timber, but to use sandpaper to finish it off and that will prevent a knot in the wood chipping out and ruining the blank. I sandpaper from around 2 - 3mm out. When I tried to cut it closer - BLAM New tube and new timber.

Thanks for the replies. A small price considering what he did, but that is one of my best turned pieces yet. Very happy with it.

They look very well done. Looks like the fit is right there. Hard to tell about the finish. I always like to see a photo of a pen that is 2 pieces in the closed state also. It gives us the complete look and a better feel for the timber. The gold or silver parts are always distracting abit at least to me. Just a suggestion. Thanks for showing.

OK Greg, so what pen have you made for the Doctor that miss-diagnosed your Mum ?..
I think it was Dai-Sensei who made the perfect pen for said Doctor only a few weeks ago. He just might have one of those special Doo Doo cast blanks set aside for just such an occasion.

Maybe I will give him a couple of dozen "Get Well Soon if You are Lucky" cards he can give to his patients. The specialist and the surgeon were horrified with his diagnosis and a really quick examination by them came up with the answer. I think you just have to be persistent and ask for another opinion which is what I did when things kept going bad. There are some really great doctors out there.
