    Default First solo pen

Well not quite but this is the first solo pen I have made that I consider worth showing on here. The timber is Tasmania Blackwood finished with 3 coats of Minwax. The pen kit came from S|E Woodworking supplies. I still got a long way to go but I reckon this one is not too bad.

Thanks Sam, I know you will spot the mistakes but I was quite pleased with that one.

    Hey John,

Looks good from where I sit. I would like to start making a few pens and would be interested in hearing what you think is wrong with that one if you don't mind.

Looks good to me. The ones you feel didn't work out are the ones you learn from, so they are valuable. That is how confidence and skill grows.
I'd like to add, so does the addiction

Keep up the good work mate, and we'd like to see more of your work.

    Cheers,

    Evan

Welcome to the madness, John. This is one very addictive hobby. Sure, you think you can go a week or two without making a pen and then you find yourself in front of the lathe again. Next thing you know, your house is littered with them and the SO is starting to complain. You find yourself stopping on the side of the road to pick up fallen timber or you come back from vacation with more timber in the boot of the car than luggage.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

Al I even have the local chemist bringing back timber from fir trips into the OZ wilderness, straps it on the outside of his off road caravan.

The staff in his shop are used to storing it and me bringing a trolley to carry it.

The problem with this pen is that I haven't turned the blanks down to the bushes and therefore the blanks are a little proud of the metal parts. You will see this if you look carefully. Sam would have picked it but is too much of a gentleman to point it out to me.

I think its already starting to bite and don't forget you are partly to blame for that too.

Looks pretty dang good for one of your first pens.

Keep it up, you will be amazed when you made a hundred or so how much you have improved.
