Sometimes its not about the wood
Thought I would share three of my latest pens. The wood is Teak which is interesting enough but not highly figured or something I would bother with, however these pieces of Teak used to be part of the deck on the Navy's Sail Training Ship (STS) Young Endeavour. I have a friend who is part of the crew onboard so have made one for her and one for the current CO.
This is also my first attempt at the CA finish and can honestly say that anyone who has been avoiding downloading DJ's CA tutorial (200meg) should just do it. I have been using Rustins which takes me about 2 1/2 days to finish while I got all three of these finished tonight and the gloss is really hard to believe (enough for the wife to notice a difference).
Hope you all enjoy, wont be around here much for the next few weeks. Going down to Cerberus for three weeks on course.

Thanks all,
David, Young Endeavour is still running (think its on the way to Tassie at the moment). The pieces that I got are from one of the old decks which was replaced.
Art, I had been trying to use medium CA which appears to be my problem. This one was as per DJ's video tutorial and very happy with the result.
SM, I tried using the paper towel as DJ showed but ended up with a lot of paper towel stuck to first my gloves and then when they melted, stuck to my fingers. Went back to a piece of tissue folded in half crossways, then in half lengthways then rolled up tight. Found this gives enough thickness to stop the CA getting to my fingers but is still soft enough to lay the CA on nicely. Have you had a look at DJ's tutorial. I thought I was doing it right until I finally downloaded it.It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

Very nice pens Corbs, and nice touch with the STS Endeavour.
I have just something similar. A friend in the Navy loves fishing at Garden Island West and found a lump of driftwood. He kept it for two years then posted East. He gave me the lump hoping I might be able to use it. I sliced it up, looks like Jarrah, made a pen for him with it and sent it today.
Regards
PS, Is Cerberus as lovely as Creswell??

Thanks Sam, I have to do my Intermediate Seamanship course down there. Should be relatively painless though.
Willy, short answer to your PS question... no. I would say its long gone but there might still be some of the deck of Moresby floating around on the West Coast too. It was our last ship to have a wooden deck but its been gone for a while now so if there is any I guess it would be pretty hard to get a hold of bits. Have seen some pretty nice pens out of driftwood too.

Corbs, great work. That is why I use CA, the time element for me is very important, but I really want to have a go at WOP. Amos

Corbs you are right sometimes it is about the history behind the wood. You are lucky to have that piece of history. I am lucky to have 5 timbers that I have been give with history and three have a direct link to my grand father, mother, brother and myself. You have done yourself proud with the CA finish and the Teak is a nice timber. I am now laying down 30 coats of thin CA in around 3 to 4 minutes. If proper precautions are used when using CA then there are no problems. Have used CA as my choice for over 4 years now with no ill affects

Terry,
CA is an abreviation of Cyano Acrylate (Sp?) which is better known as Superglue. When its laid down properly (see DJ's video tutorial) then the finish is really hard to believe.
Darren,
Sounds like you will have some enjoyable projects down the track when you start working with those bits of wood. I caught the fumes a couple of times but that was only because the shed was closed up. Might grab a fan as I have heard others use one behind them to good effect. I think this has just become my finish of choice. Will cost a bit more though as I seem to be going through a bottle of thin CA fairly fast, that might improve with technique though.

Nice pens Corbs
I love making pens out of timber with history or even a simple story. I would say it better than making a pen with stunning piece of timber.
I have an old gun stock that my dad taught me and my brothers to shoot with. The gun was declared illegal with the new regulation a few years ago so kept the stock and now I just need to find a suitable pen kit to make for my brothers and my dad.Cheers Rum Pig

Nice work and history to go with it. Doesn't get much better than that.
Reality is no background music.
