Sitcoaustralia - linked above, is the company I got a stave of the stuff from.
Beautiful stuff to work with. Very hard, very heavy, and finished in a lovely medium-dark chocolate brown colour. This darkens with age over time or can be artificially accelerated with ammonia as suggested to a very rich dark brown/black.

Gents.
You all have me abuzz. I have ordered some blanks of various timbers to see what I want.
I have contacted Sitoaustralia and we will see what happens.
A couple of members here have offered me some blanks to try. Thankyou very much.
Will keep you all informed as to what happens next.
Cheers
