Sporadic ink flow
I have done a bit of a search on the forum without success.
A fountain pen I have made and given as a present has a problem with the ink flow which is disappointing and annoying.
Imagine you are drawing a straight line, the ink flows well for about 15-20 mm of a line then there will be a length of 5-10 mm where the nib is starved of ink for some reason then it comes good again, only to repeat again.
I have done this test a number of times and I am confident that I am not changing the angle or pressure of the nib on the paper. I have used different pieces of paper so it is not a fault/patch within the page as best as I can work out.
The ink is in a refillable reservoir where you twist the little knob on the end to raise/lower the plunger inside, not a disposable cartridge. When filling it, the suction mechanism cannot seem to fully fill the reservoir, there is always a small gap immediately below the end of the plunger.
Has anyone else come across this dillema before and is there a solution or have I just got an imperfect nib?

All the signs of a "dirty" nib. Might be due to muck from the manufacturing process... hopefully just a partial blockage in the nib hole or the feed channel.
Could also be due to sediment in the ink, if the ink has a bit of age to it. (ie. it'd be your own damned fault! )
This site has a simple explanation of cleaning blockages, except that it's assuming the blockage is dried ink and thus water soluble. Not necessarily true if it's a spall of plastic or something, but you might be able to flush it that way.
Some of the better quality pens allow you to remove the nib and feed from the lower barrel, so you can clean them properly. Unfortunately the cheaper ones are press fit and won't disassemble.
