Stabilised pen blank finish ?
I received a dyed and stabilised Curly Maple blank in a swap I did last year. I have never turned this stuff before.
I have the blank drilled and glued up ready to turn, but I am wondering if I have to put a finish on this stuff, or do I just polish it up "as is" ?
Has anyone got any experience with this stuff, and can give me a heads up of what to expect.
Thanks in advance.Brad.

Hehe ! I think what Neil is saying is you just do your normal finish, be that friction CA or dipped , In my experience with stabilized timbers is that they are stabilized because they are inherently soft or punky timbers, the stabilizing helps to keep them together CA puts a hard protective coating over the whole thing ,but not really necessary in a lot of cases ,worthless wood type blanks being wood and acrylic need CA to keep the whole thing even ,if not then patchy results from the finish between wood and acrylic is not that good, Cheers ~ John

Thanks John, I sort of knew all along that I would have to put a finish on it, but thought I would check to see what others had done just in case.
I was given this blank in a swap from the USA. It looks to be a professionally dyed and stabilised blank as the colour and resin has penetrated right through the blank evenly. Drilling it was different to any wood blank I have ever done before.
I am looking forward to turning it this afternoon.Brad.
