This thread contains some handy links.
And this thread is a basic, rough'n'ready guide on how to make a pen with the minimum of tooling.

G'day Shedman,
I got my start by going to htp://www.pennstateind.com and ordering their free dvd on pen turning. It is basic, but it does just that...shows you the basics to pen turning. If you would like to go this route and if they won't ship it to Australia for free, shoot me a PM and I will order it and post it off to ya.
I don't know if anybody warned you or not....this stuff is highly addictive. Before you know it, you will be rummaging in wood bins, looking at every piece of wood you come across considering it for pens. You will also have new "friends" that want your pens. Good luck.

Thanks
Thanks for the great welcome and useful information. Does anyone make pens on a large lathe or is it better to use one of the really small ones you see advertised?
Thanks

Hi shedman and welcome aboard,
don,t have a problem turning pens with fullsize gear,
