My First Two Pens
Pictured below are my first two pens, as the first I chose Australian Cedar - an ancestor of mine was a involved in the timber industry in the 1870's and cut a lot of it. Sanded to 400 and then polished.
For the second one I chose Tasmanian Blackwood - this is for SHMBO, her family originally lived in Tasmania. Sanded to 400 and then finished with friction polish.
Tomorrow I have to get cracking and do a few more for the kids for Christmas.Regards

Great looking pens.
Hope you finish in time for Christmas. Christmas snuck up on me and I don't think I will be able to finish all my pen before Christmas.

Just lucky with the choice of blanks
I was just lucky with the blanks, I received a bucket load when I bought the Jet Mini from another forumite - along with a bag of pen kits.
I bought a pack of slimline kits to practice on and will try some of the better kits with some of the more exotic blanks that are in the stash, the family are already putting their orders in but I have earmarked a dozen or so of the best blanks for my own 'set' of pens.Regards

Brendan,
Welcome to the pen turning fraternity. I really like the Blackwood, is it cross cut as others have suggested or just have nice fiddleback? If its cross cut then you're a long way infront. Have only successfully completed a few cross cut pens myself. My only suggestion is to find a background that isn't so busy for your pens, the blackwood one gets a bit lost for me. Nice pens and keep them coming.
CorbsIt's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

Very nice! Love that blackwood.

Nothing to add other than whats already been said,. I like the pics but would have preferred them a bit larger. Old eyes are not what they use to be.
but great work.
Reality is no background music.

Thanks for the kind words
Hi All,
Thanks for the kind words, I have held off replying until I was able to confirm that the Blackwood blank was not cross cut - it does have very nice fiddle back as you can see.
Since completing these I have attempted two more, the timber was Goldfields Burl and I lost both. From advice I received today it was probably a combination of blunt tools, a not very steady lathe stand and too high a speed
Oh well, the kids will have to wait a bit for their Christmas Surprises.Regards
Brendan

Don't you hate that, Complete a couple nicely , then for some strange reason, no matter how careful, how sharp, bang! there it goes!
