Default PALO-DE-HIERRO, OLNEYA TESOTA,DESERT IRONWOOD on a Tempest Kit.

In the Desert areas of Mexico and the Arizona Desert in the US this extraordinary tree grows. It is a member of the Pea Family blossoming before the leaves form each year providing a micro system of shade when the leaves form and the Sweet Pea like flowers mature into a Pea shape full of seeds giving life to the animals and birds who kindly distribute the seeds to perpetuate the trees. It is said the pleasant 15 degree F drop in temperature makes it a sought after place to be. Also it indicates where some meagre water may be found nearby. Rare as and protected timber.

This beautiful piece of wood yielded burl in all its glory, the Pen Kit from the UK.

In my blank room I have run in to many surprises that have been waiting for just this and other special treatment. As it unfolded I was determined to retain as much of the character as I could. Like many heavy and tough timbers it turned well (sinks in water).

After so much real sickness I am having fun again.

    Peter.

the colours and grain are great. I like the way you turned the pen ..its own character.

turning the hard timbers is always tricky ... good result on this one
