Thanks for the advice Dale. I will have to have another try when I get a chance and see if I can get better shots. I haven't had this much trouble before to get good shoots. I tried a point and shoot camera, and a DSLR. Both gave me the same results. Maybe we will have to have a forum get together at your place to learn how to photograph our pens better. Plenty of room in that new shed when you move.
Happy to have a "product" photography get together to learn how to best take shots. I could even set up the studio lights and 3m wide back drops etc and people can bring some of their larger work also and I can shoot it for them……….Maybe I should charge a pen per session

At least this is one area where I do know what I am doing and can give back to the forum for all the learning I am getting.

    OK,

Tried one of Marks cactus stabilised blanks.

Seeing I had the 2 halves went for a streamline cos I like the 1/2 inch centre.

Unfortunately, a big chunk flew off once I got to round (centre piece in picture).
It went down as far as the bushes

Thats OK I thought, I'll make it a slimline with that yucky centre band but at least I'll get there.

was just getting down to bushes and the same split/crack flew off the tube.
Never had this happen before, so don't know what to say.

I can see it looks like its not glued to the tube, but sanded the same as always, glued the same as always.

Will see if I can find the piece in shed and maybe glue back on.

    Stay tuned.

Peter, after your Triple Success wtih the other pens/blanks, it went to your head! and you had to be brought down to earth to suffer the fate that Pen Turners suffer from time to time- the blank that blows up!
Keep at it, I'm sure one will turn nicely for you, Amos

I found the 2 pieces that came off and glued them back on.
Left it for a while to set and tried again.
It also tried again and threw the 2 pieces back at me again.

It had to happen after 100's of pens didn't it. Ah well.
Not sure if I'll try it again, Maybe try a different stabilized piece.

Peter, I think in that case it would be best to use the 60 Grit tool!!!!, less likelihood of flying off again. Amos

    Default Here you are Mark

Well after seeing the drama that Fly has been put through I thought I had better have a go at my stabilized blank. Fortunately mine appears to be stable right though and solid except for a little bit of punkiness in a few places. I put a bit of CA on the surface to harden it up, and filled a few worm holes. I can't remember what the blank was, so maybe Mark can help out here.
I have just finished it and took a few photos with the phone, so nothing flash.

I've been in awe of the results of the casting day, they are real beauties.

I also have a cast blank and also some stabilized blanks but haven't done anything with them as yet as over the weekend I caught the dreaded lurgies and as I have to take imuno depressing pills for my liver problem it knocked me about more then ever before.

Been in bed for two days as I felt too weak and dizzy to go down to the workshop. So with Christmas approaching fast I won't have time to make a real Sturdee pen to show until after Christmas.

    Peter.

The cast pens look great . I take it although the photos don't show it too well, the pods are in a bright red, and the outer is a flouro green.

As for the stabilized blank Fly, definitely looks like not enough glue. i always use epoxy, coat the entire blank inside, then coat the entire tube, then push together. Yes it sues a little more glue, but it rarely fails, especially if then CA is used first to stabilize the timber and fill any cracks/holes.
