    Default Another Sturdee pen

Here is my contribution from the casts that Neil did at Sturdee's place last weekend.
I got one of the casts with the Sheoak pods, and green resin which I think had some mica in it. I soaked the drilled hole with thin CA, and then redrilled as suggested by Neil to help prevent seperation. I painted the tubes black before gluing in.
For some reason I struggled to get decent photos today. I don't know if it is the contrasting colours in the blanks that upset the camera. Didn't seem to happen to the one Amos did though with similar colours. This is the best of what I got.
I have one more cast left which is a burl cast. Hopefully I will get it done next weekend.

    Thats a good looking pen.
I better do mine, should have hardened up enough by now.
That was one of the 4 we cast.

I think the one Amos turned was the burl casting.

    Do you like it?

I like that better than mine! well done Dallas, I find that if I try to photograph with a Black background, I do not get as good a picture, try it on a light grey background, I also fing photographing with white background I have difficulty getting correct contrast etc. Amos
PS I found the Burl cast very hard, Amos

I am still struggling with the bright green as I did on the one Amos did, but obviously others have a different opinion on that.
Happy with the Cigar kit though, as it is large enough to show a lot of the cast.

Thanks for the advice Amos. I tried with white and black backgrounds and seemed to have trouble with both. It was easier to photograph the blanks with my phone before I turned them.
The seed pods were quite hard compared to the resin too.

Very well done Dallas, a great result. These mixed media blanks are not easy to turn, but your finish looks superb.

Like, you I am not 100% sold on the colours, I really feel these would have looked better with a less contrasting colour combination. I think there's not much wrong with your photos at all.

As I haven't turned mine yet I can only hope I can achieve a result as good as yours.

    Well done.

If you drop that pen on a desk, you are not going to lose it.

Some woman will nick that for her bag as she'll always be able to find it.

Those pods have been drying in my shed for a year, but were dry when I picked them, If anyone wants any just PM me.

And kids like the bright colours.

And no-one can pinch it and say its theirs.

It you guys are using point and shoot cameras or DSLR on auto modes the sensor tries to evaluate the total image at an exposure of 50% grey. so if the background is the predominant part of the image with a thin line of a pen running through it the camera will do the wrong thing by you and either over or under expose on black , or white backgrounds. This is why Amos is getting a better result on a grey background.

I shoot in full manual mode and can get stunning shots on white or black, so it can be done but you need a bit more mastery of photography to do so. Having said that I take most of my workshop & project photos with my Iphone because it is what is readily available at the time. I always say I'll take a proper photo later but never do. I guess it is like the motor mechanic always drives the worst car etc.

great looking pen, i like the contrasting colors, adds to the character

those sheoak pods give a honey comb look to the pen

i do agree mixed media does add an extra level of difficulty

OK, did part of mine tonight.
You do get the yellow red to brown blend but only in the middle.
Should have done something thicker, Ah well.

Maybe slice the pod up next time for the starry pattern.
    But its ok.

Very nice casting. The colour combo is brilliant. I wish I could get my hands on these Sheaoak pods.

That was quick work Fly. One minute you are saying you must do your blanks, and the next minute you have 3 of them finished. You appear to have been able to centralise yours quite well to give a fairly even appearance. Well done.
Thanks for the advice Dale. I will have to have another try when I get a chance and see if I can get better shots. I haven't had this much trouble before to get good shoots. I tried a point and shoot camera, and a DSLR. Both gave me the same results. Maybe we will have to have a forum get together at your place to learn how to photograph our pens better. Plenty of room in that new shed when you move.
