    Default Sunday a pen

Thompy (Neal) came over on Sunday and we had the best part of a day experimenting (or more to the point he spent the best part of the day giving me tips, showing me some tricks and adjusting my machinery). As usual I learnt a hell of a lot in the few hours we were in the shed and really appreciate his advice. Thanks to Neal I now have the drilling of my blanks getting down to a fine art on the lathe. My bandsaw is also cutting straight after I got a great lesson in the proper use of it. I must remember to read the manuals

We then set about practising making a captured ring with the new dental picks I got off ebay. I think we started with a bit of timber that was nearly steel and should have gone for huon for my first attempt. Nevertheless we got there.

Neal made me a laminated blank and brought it over so I could turn a pen from it. I got him on the band saw to cut it - it is not the best of saws! (See my other post asking for more advice). So to cut a long story short I have posted the finished product we came up with. A Sierra with Red Cedar and Norfolk pine blank, burnished with BLO and coated with 20 coats of thin CA and finished with Canubra polish. It ascutally looks better than the photograph as my photography is up to ****

    Thanks for the assistance Neal

i didn't realise i did that much mate, and thank you both for lunch and letting me have a play on your lil woodfast, the more i use em the more i like em. It was my pleasure mate, and i did my own bit of learning whist there, i need a dust extractor for sure and i need to clean and organise myself far better than i do. And i have to look into bigsheds? bushes. and make up your end ca / tube sander. I think i get as much out of our get togethers as you do mate.

Its a top pen mate, very happy with our glue up and you turned it and finished it expertly. Maybe try getting it into direct sunlight to make the pen pop a bit more piccy wise, something about sunlight and the ca depth i cant ever seem to get unless i have it outside on a clear day

The pen is beaut the pic is out of focus the focus is behind the pen, then cropping takes away the unnecessary.

Whatever your camera is you can increase the distance of focus (called depth of field) however dependant on your lighting this then slows down the speed of the shutter making IMHO use of a tripod essential equipment.

I agree with your observation the pen has a great finish, like it as well.

Found it exciting when you can share time in the workshop with friends I think I star better on my own but conversation and observation of others work wonders one thing leads to another.

Today I shared a mates real deep passion for cars he has a near new bright red Ferrari this colour is 20.000 dearer than white is two metres wide, I am not jealous but incredibly happy for him with his 30K Mileage. This mate is Swiss by birth and an incredible specialist using metal, cars etc a breath of fresh air.WE worked at CSIRO for years many years ago used to ride our pushbikes 15kms to work together shared some good times.

    Kind regards Peter.

A near new bright red Ferrari now that has me envious Peter. However, I would have a lot of trouble getting down to sit into it and out again so I will have to be happy with the old Ford Territory; to be replaced by a new VW Tiguan when it finally arrives ( a retirement present to my wife and myself )

You are right though, I have to learn how to take photos. I will get some lessons from my son in law who is an up and coming photographer: better still I will get him to take them . I need to re-photograph everything on my website to show up the timber colours better.

In the meantime I will practice what I learnt the other day from Neal and surprise everyone with a photo posted of a different style pen.

Always a pleasure to have you over Neal. We must get up to Mapleman's place in the next 3 weeks to get the timber for the grinders and some blanks for Pariss.

That's an absolute ripper pen Greg & Neal. Better stick that one in the "Private Reserve" section of your collection of pens.

I am putting that one aside for me and I will use it as a basis to make some more with a slightly different design to get a variety of finishes. Should be fun now that I have been shown how to measure, cut and assemble this type of pen. I want to get into a celtic knot soon but not before the captured ring pen.

Pariss. Now I could keep that as a closely guarded secret. But it is a pen, eg, a slimline that has a laminated upper blank and a circle cut out in the middle laminate with a dental pick so that a circle of wood is left round the upper blank. Each end of the captured section of the pen is raised and the ring of wood slides between the two, thus captured. Following me yet?? More explanation needed?? Suspense building up - sorry i am being a smartar**

Have a look in the tutorial section of the pen turners forum on here and you will find it and a lot of other great ideas. I have printed them all out and it takes up the best part of an A4 ring binder.

Now I bet you will make one better than me
