    Default Teak

A friend called in the other day and said he had a present for me. It was a board of Teak. Man it is heavy when you have a lot of it. It cost me heaps, 2 slim line pens for him and his wife. I docked 130 mm off the plank and cut a few banks up. A very plain grain to it but a rich colour. The board would be about roughly 9"x2"x5'. Here are just 2 of the blanks, one turned and sanded to 600 grit and one straight off the saw.

Teak is a great wood for pens. I do not find it too plain at all, the grain pops out with a good finishing technique. I have only made 4 teak pens, but they all have sold.

Mate that pen is beautiful, I hope the grain pops like that on mine. It is crazy though, when you hold a pen blank you think it is a light timber, but as a board it is so heavy. Do you use BLO first or do you finish with CA or WOP? I will certainly make a few with it.

BLO will make it pop too, but this pen was done by sanding the wood all the way to MM12000, then a CA finish, sand and a buff. When you sand the wood ultra smooth, the grain pops very similar to using BLO. This trick is a Russ Fairfield innovation.

Hey Darren. Teak makes terrific box's too. If your into box making, you could make a nice little display box for your best pens, and have some offcuts for a few pens. I did the same last year with a board of PNG Rosewood.
    I never forget anything I remember !!

Oh Pariss how i wish I able too. When it comes to flat work and joints there is always a can of plastic wood close by Maybe when I find the patience and learn to take my time, I will need to talk to you. Till then the rest of the board will sit and wait. There are box makers in the guild in Bundy so I may start learning from them. I love your boxes too mate. one day
