Thank God it's still May!
Ok, I seem to complain that time slips away all too quickly and that shed time doesn't factor into family life too easily....but enough if that .....
May challenge. I am involved in a few swaps currently so the first pen is headed over to USA.... Sssshhhh..... Don't tell anyone I posted a photo here before I actually posted the pen in the mail. The blank was made by Steve Daniels (5 flag creations) who makes all sorts of resin and glow combinations. His lastest I have seen was a full resin banksia pod
The second pen is one of my casts with mallee burl from a miller in South Australia (Whyalla timber slabs - thanks Byron). Ripper little block with lots of old bug tunnels and such so plenty of resin holes. This one is to be donated to silent auction. A school teaching friend is raising money to take his class on the Kokoda track. I hope it fetches a little to help their journey. I think I'll do one more for them out of straight timber in case there are a few nature people at the auction (and to help empty all their pockets)
Finally a shot of a blank I'm making. It's in the pressure pot tonight, so hopefully I get a useful blank outta it.... Not my idea but an idea I quite like.....
Still need to get one more done before Saturday!!
Cheers all

WoW Gab... just fantastic. Love the way that scraps can be assembled and bonded together with colourful resins, as you have done.
Similarly too many very pretty woods are discarded because of cracks or rot or burn where these could add interest. Often the best and most figured woods are what some see as faulty and end up in the scrap or firewood box.

Lovely work.
Euge - nothing goes into the fire/scrap bin until something has been attempted to make use of the timber. Nothing ventured - no nice, different pen.

Very true Euge, done of the nicest grains/figure/features are on the edges which traditionally wouldn't be used. I'm with Don, I feel bad when I'm putting bark in the firewood pile so every bit gets used where I can.
I do enjoy using resin however I still think timber is king when it comes to beautiful pens"All the gear and no idea"

Thanks for showing this lot Gab, good stuff.
I am curious how he kept the colours separated so well in that blank, did he use ribbons ?
I hope your 2nd pen does well at auction.
Would love to see how that “stick” blank turns out, there are lots of possibilities with that idea.Brad.

Nicely done on the turning and your casting looks great with the burl and the colour combination.

Ok.... It's now June but I promise I finished this one on Friday!!
One of the most amazing timbers Australia has to offer in my opinion (but there are HEAPS). From the local timbers I have worked with, the natural colour variation and amazing grain lines in lace sheoak (from W.A.) certainly puts it right up near the top of the list..... Every time I catch up with Euge, the list seems to grow though
This piece was supplied by dusteater on here, thanks David, it turned up a treat!!
Ironwood, the glow blank has some sort of nut or nut shell in it, and the glow powder was only in one of the colours of resin. When pouring the resin you need to wait til 'magic time'.... This varies dependant of weather, resin, brand, colourants but simply put, magic time is when the resin begins to thicken but not quite set. This means the colours won't mix, and the swirls hold their shape without running. This is generally trial end error. I am currently experimenting with a new (to me) resin and have had a few misses...... Colours mixing to make ugly browns (mixed too early), or just straight layers of colour (mixed too late)......I'll get there though
Sorry if this wasn't the intention of your question, but it may help others to give resin a crack too
Hopefully I can continue the three pens into June
Cheers all

Great looking pen and very nicely finished. All that figure in the Lace works well in such a small object.
Nice to see some green grass in the background. Don't know if your lawn was like ours but it was looking pretty sad towards the end of the dry period.Dallas

That SheOak looks looks great Gab, nicely finished too, good job.
We are certainly blessed with some great timbers in this country.
Thanks for the explanation of the resin pouring. That helps me understand how.
I did some blank casting a few years back, so I know how things can turn pearshaped if you leave it a minute or 2 too long.Brad.

Cheers Dallas, yup.... Very green down the peninsula...been raining very heavily this last week - and whilst I manage 10 or 15 mins for some pen things occasionally....I really don't have time to cut grass
Ok, ive cut and painted my my twiggy blank so hopefully some results in the near future

Alas, it wasn't meant to be......
Tried all my traditional chisels before settling on carbide, which could have lead to my undoing.....
One twig came loose, and a split second later.....bang!
I've been given the hint that maybe every few passed I could ca it to fill any voids etc.....and I probably should has kept going with the skew....
Anyhoo, I may try to polish up the one that is still in one piece to see if it's worth trying again...
Cheers all

That's a shame after all the effort I know you would have had to put in to make the blank. Did you use polyester or epoxy resin?

That’s a buqqer. I too am interested in knowing what type of resin.
Brad.

I thought that you may have used polyester and it didn't have the same adhesion to the wood as epoxy but I was wrong. No chance of gluing the piece back in and disguise the joins?
