Timber blow out.
I have gone off Acrylics for a bit as working with timber is so much easier and the finished products look brilliant. I have been trying out lots of different timbers lately and few have had knots in them. When I turn through a knot the chisels grabs and rips out a big chunk. Anyway of stopping this happening? It happened twice last night and I havn't had any issues for a while and it's a bit dissapointing to see a beautiful burl explode.
Cheers
Shoey

Hi Shoey I am going to suggest using CA to stableize the knots and other soft spots on the timber and you may find you have to keep doing it as you turn the timber down to size and this will help to make sure the blank hold together. I am reasonably confident with my answer but other may have a better suggestion.

I agree with Dorno
also very sharp chisels and light passes (this is my problem - I tend to go at it like a bull at a gate)regards

I would not only recommend the thin CA, I would also recommend a sharp skew with high angle attack. No scrapers, nor other other chisels used in scraping action, you are just asking to pluck stuff out.

Everything they have said above except that I use a roughing gouge rather than a skew.
I would also suggest that you spread CA down the drill hole and let it set before you glue in the brass tube.
This way you stabilise from the inside out.
When gluing in the brass tube, use a cotton bud to evenly spread it around the inside of the hole. The cotton bud ensures that you get CA through the length of the hole.Direct Importer of pen kits. Lowest prices and largest range.
