You could try this web site called "google" or "Wikipedia". That is where I usually go for my timber info. May take a while to find, especially the more exotic timbers, but sure enough you will find it.

I've always wanted to buy some of those Timber ID books, but they've always been too expensive

The Australian Timber Buyers guide seems to be the main one around, but the description for it "A beginner’s guide to common timbers sold in Australia" doesn't really seem what I'd like, as I'm more interested in uncommon timbers not generally sold. The common sold ones everyone generally knows about anyway, don't they? Although if it's a 3-ring binder, with additional inserts available, it must be for more than the 3 or 4 species I see commonly sold.

Apart from that, and just internet searching, I'm not sure what else is worth looking at, sorry.

If you go to the Vic Woodworking Associations home page info can be gained from the pull-down at the top... "Timber & Forest" I think.

There also used to be a really good on-line database that showed photos of tree, foliage, raw & finished timbers as well as providing info but I lost my bookmarks and don't remember it's address. (Many of the addresses I've tried from vague memory take me to sites I've never visited in my life!)

I'm pretty sure that Woodweb used to have a similar database, but I can't find it on their current page.(Plenty of other info, though.)
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

    thanks for the link Skew.
I'll now refrain from posting the obvious comments about the "addresses I've tried from vague memory take me to sites I've never visited in my life!"

Wow, that's a great web site, and that Egg display case - OMG, what a fantastic job!

His timber info is really an inspiration. Makes me want to get out there and identify all the trees in my local area. I'm absolutely hopeless. Every tree I see looks like a Eucalypt to me, and don't ask me what type of Eucalypt, they're all the same, aren't they

I definitely need to find a local club...

This is one of the best cataloged timber websites I have ever come across. Nice guy too. I've bought veneer off him. Check out his cocobolo section.

Funny - I sent this chap an email about Blue Gum and Sydney Blue Gum some time ago, quoting from our CSIRO's eucalypt book. Never got a response and I note the inaccuracy persists.
