Timber suggestions?
Hi folks,
Well, I'm finally trying to get back into doing pens. We had visitors on the weekend who I showed my past efforts to, and she immediately started placing orders for pens for next year
She'd like a baron done in a darkish Queensland timber.
Anyone got any suggestions what types I should look out for? Someething with a nice texture, not just colour.
Thanks. Russell.Pen Affair Craft Supplies - Cheapest Pearl Ex & Pemo Polymer Clay in Australia

All the above OR, Bendee (turns and finishes superbly), Black Gidgee ( hard as flint).

Haha very funny. I might be though, forgotten everything.
Qld Waknut? Do I have to find a member of a Qld cricket team to get that??
I may have a piece of Gidgee somewhere, but yeah, always cringe when I think of turning it. Never heard of Bendee before.
Hmm, I think a forumite might have sent me some Mackay Cedar, now I think of it??
All of my current qld stock I can remember is light wood - Beech, CL, Peach, Silky Oak. I do have some rosewoods, but they're foreign.
I also asked if they had any furniture they wanted "converted" to give that sentimental touch, too
Thanks for the tips. I'll keep an eye out.

Yeah I thought that was you, but wanted to check first. I have some stuff John gave me, and some other stuff I bought on Ebay that have barely seen the light of day yet. I guess I should just go through my collection yet. Still working in Brissy during the weke though, so can't browse the collection till the weekend.

And these are all Qld timbers?? I have some Hairy Oak. I'd consider it a light wood, compared to what she was asking for.
It's funny actually, what she first asked for as the "pen with the dark wood" was my red/black resin pen like the big cigar I did for the BIL, that I've posted a before

I tend to look at Hairy Oak as a medium colour for a pen. If a lighter wood why not look at Budgeroo. Also one I forgot in the dark range is Australian Ebony.

My one attempt at turning gidgee turned out fine - I was worried about how it would go but in the end no probs - I've found that the dense woods seem to turn better then some of the lighter woods.
Is this just me or do people agree across the boardregards

Nick I would tend to agree but even with the dense woods you cut against the grain it can be a bear to finish. I was given some Red Iron Bark and it has a dark rich colour and even cutting with the grain it was the crankiest piece I have turned in a while. The less dense can cut good or bad. I tend to cut right to left mostly so i orientate the blank so it is running right to left with the grain to make it easier to cut. razor sharp skew chisels always are a plus though.
