Timberbits Sierra Stylus in Hairy Oak
Hi All,
I like some others here on the forums, had a nice surprise through the post a few days back. Thanks David the sierra stylus pen kits are very much appreciated
I had re-sawn a large piece of hairy oak sometime ago that I bought at the Brisbane wood show last year for some box making boards and had enough to also cut up some pen blanks so here is one used on one of Davids Sierra Stylus pens.

Thanks
Tony.

Interesting grain structure, is that considered 'normal' for HairyOak?
Fit-n-finish, as always, are spot-on!
Scott (gotta turn the piece I have now) B

Nice one Tony, Hairy Oak is a favourite of mine.
Scot, while every piece/blank will be a bit different, that is typical of what Hairy Oak is like.
Here is a link to another one I did that has a bit of sapwood in it.

The Casuarina species are among the best blanks that can be had sliced up from timber slabs I reckon. Nice pen

Tony
Mission Accomplished justice satisfied on all fronts with that lovely piece of one of my all time favourites Hairy Oak. IMHO that is as good as it gets with the grain and when cross cut it gains legs. Hard to imagine faced with your beautiful pen.
Warning Hairy Oak can be tough to cut, murder on drills and if its cut across the grain beware of splits with the medullary rays.
Anyway on a scale of 1-10 Tony your pen is flying to the top.
Colour can vary from pale to almost black from speckled to intense markings entirely dependant on growing area and conditions but I love it.
Kind regards Peter.Nil Desperandum

Nice job Tony
I'm a fan of the Hairy Oak as well, you just reminded me I have a small box of these blanks still to turn now where did I put them...
Seeing all these Stylus Sierras is making me think I should add a couple to my next order from David.
Cheers,
Graeme
