Todays Turnings
Hi All,
Well I have certainly got the bug!! any chance I get, I'm out in the garage either making more pens or out to the local shops buying kits or more blanks to keep me going
I am sort of experimenting with different shapes at present and working on my CA finishing technique so keen to see what others think.
Here is today's lot
1. Arylic
2. Rosewood
3. Australian Hardwood
4. Golden Parrot
5. Silky Oak

The acrylic pen in the above pic and close up below is my first Acrylic one, or should I say second one as the first one did not turn out too well due to the acrylic being to transparent and I was not fully aware of the process of painting the tube or the inside of the blank when using acrylic.
I'm pretty happy with how this one turned out.

Cheers
Tony.

Hey Tony
Awesome collection mate and well done to love them all, As for painting the tube or the blanks I have learnt that what work for some dosent work for others I had an acrylic called Orchid from timberbits a while ago that I wasnt sure about the tube showing as I was new to turning acrylics so i posted it on here and I got some good feed back and the feed was that most of them would paint it black so I did. I turned the pen down and finished it off, I looked at it and I hated it. It was to dark for my liking but the lady I made for was wrapped with it. I then got a post from David from timberbits and he said he never painted the orchid ones so since then I painted some spare tubes for each kit I have and I test it out before I glue it in most of the time my tubes are unpainted an I have sold many like that so try it out and just coz the tube can be seen dosent mean some wont want the pen good luck mate just my two cents worth

Hi All,
and thanks for the positive comments. Done a few more acrylic pens today and a few more timber ones. Thought I would show the acrylics just to get some feedback although I am very happy with them.

Hey Troy
AWESOME job on those ones they well go nicely with your collection, What finish do you use and how do you sand them, I take it all your pen stuff is coming from Timberbits, The second last photo is that the Orchid blank from TB. Did you paint all the tube on your acrylics here is the one I was talking about (pics attached) the 1st ones tube was painted black and the 2nd ones white and they are the same blank

Very nice collection there I'm very jealous of your shed time. Well done
It is funny how we pick up on little faults like the tube showing but yet 90% of customers do not even if you point it out. They just tend to look at the pen as a whole instead of bits and pieces like we do. I made a acrylic Jr Gent and you could see the tube and the air bubbles so I thought it was rubbish but one of mates seen it and love the effect the bubble gave the pen. He still uses it proudly every day.Cheers Rum Pig

Hi Ian,
Thanks for your kind words, I use a combination of different finishes depending on the look I want from the timber blank and for the particular pen. With the acrylics I have been giving them a very light sand too remove any tool marks and to obtain a reasonable finish and then I use my MM kit followed by some car polish which gives that strong lustre to the blank. I did paint all the blanks but not the tubes, I found I had more success doing the blanks than painting the tubes. I did recently recieve a box from TB but I do also buy some gear from Dave at Southeast Queensland Woodworking Supplies as he is nice and local for me, that is where these blanks came from that you are talking about. I have only so far experimented with painting the blanks black and white but will eventually experiment with other colours especially on the more transparent blanks to get different effects, its amazing how you can change the blanks look by experimenting.
Cheers
Tony.
