    Smile Transfers

    Hi everyone,

I am a newby to your very informative forum. Took me a while to decide and find a forum to visit with my problems and achievements.
I am doing quite well with making pens having sold a fishing lure that financed my little GPW lathe.
Waste timber laying around various friends homes has enhanced my blank bank.
I certainly don't know what timber is what and over time I may just learn which ones I like.

I like using acrylics but they don't sell as well as timber.

I used to make some very fancy fishing rods years ago before my eye sight went south. Can't see the fine threads any more.

Viewing a few threads and some pen examples I noticed a few artists are using small transfers wrapped around the blank. I would like to get some transfers made and after many searches on Mr Google I have not managed to find a manufacturer willing or capable of doing the job. I did hear there was someone in WA that could do something but could not find out any names etc.

Anyway thanks for allowing me to join your forum and maybe join in the conversations that interest me.

    Hi Welcome.

You can buy decal paper on ebay , here's an example
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/5-x-A4-IN...item1e9abc60a1

You can then print your own on a colour printer (there are ink jet decals and laser decals so make sure you get the right ones).

after printing spray with a clear acylic rattle can.
then you can put them onto the tube just like the old model planes you did as a kid.

Then cast clear resin (polyester or epoxy) over the top.

    Hope that helps

    Peter

As Fly says ,best to make your own, easy enough with an inkjet printer and some suitable software for graphics manipulation ,seems you would have the ability to do so, with any help needed from the forums . Mostly though you may need to do your own clear casting as well ,easy enough and not expensive to get started ,lots of info on this in the casting section at the top of this pen turning forum . Welcome to the addiction hehe, cheers ~ John

Thank you Peter and John, (sound like a bible quote) I think there is one missing Ha Ha

I will try out printing as the cost is quite low and I get a pretty good image from my printer.
If the result is not up to what I want I can always use it for my grand daughter.

Re casting, for the number of pens I make I think I will stay with the usual supplier.
I have found those Aussie made acrylics a bit powdery and they are not as easy to turn as the usual acrylics.
Beautiful colours though, and my preference as they are dark colours as well.

For interest to those who want any large slabs of mahogany timber up to 3.5Metres long and 800mm wide I have a contact here in Townsville area.
Transport is the major problem, buying price from about $150.00 a slab. Also a few mahogany burls are in his truck last time I talked to him.

Another question about transfers. I have ordered some clear sheets. I then remembered any print made by an ink jet can be wiped off instantly with water.
How does one cover the transfer with a finish coat ?

Yep ,let the ink on the paper dry for a while then a few light coats of clear acrylic spray, if you are putting on tubes you may need to paint the tubes, if going on wood or acrylic ,you may need a few thin coats of CA to seal and protect the finished product, like most of these things it is entirely up to you according to your needs ,have fun ,always something new to try in this addiction hehe, cheers ~ John
