An Urushi 80% Kitless
I posted this on the IAP site and thought I should post it here as it was intended to be involved in the pen swap but alas it didn't quite make it to the "perfect pen" status I was aiming for. The fit is very good and the finish IS perfect but I don't like the metal front section I used. I'd prefer an El Grande section to the Retro I chose. Anyway, it's all urushi over a sakura wood base. 10 layers of seshimi urushi (3 different colours) and 2 final coats of roiro for the shine. Let me know what you guys think.

Gobsmacked
The other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

Absolutely stunning Chris
I am sure Fred would have been please with that one, you really know how to put the bar up.
I must investigate if it is possible to get the gear and try this finish, very impressed, you need to tell us more about it maybe a tutorial if that's possible.
I have been in a lot of pen swaps but the standard that is coming out this years is unbelievably high, where will it go next year. I hope to have two more forums involved then.
Keep uyp the excellent work and please keep this forum aware of what youare up to

Well I guess I can't make any comments about the shape on this forum
Sakura is Cherry, right? So what's seshimi urushi? I know sashimi is like raw fish, but I doubt that's what you used
It looks very classy. Does it feel like a plastic finish? You'd never guess there's wood under all that from the looks. Just how long does it take to do all that finishing?

Thanks for the kind words Sam. This finish has a big learning curve and ISN'T cheap to get set-up and is quite noxious but it's fun to do and extremely rewarding.

Haha....yes, we have to be civil to each other here..
I did in fact make a mistake....it's seshime not seshimi. Seshime is a cheaper prep lacquer used for building up layers. Roiro is black but when diluted it becomes a little bit transparent. How does it feel? Hmm...like urushi. You certainly know it's not plastic. There are other types of urushi that let the grain of the wood show through but I haven't tried that technique yet. It takes a ...wee.....bit longer than a CA finish.

Hi
Incredible detail smooth as silk and reminiscent of a work of art that it really is.
My two doors neighbour will visit Japan again in the middle to one week on in to receive his Masters and concurrent degrees in march , he has a Japanese wife and will stay with her sister, he still has stuff to bring back to Australia so he is travelling light, he is taking some stuff for Lee down the track from you, if you send me a pm I want to send you some timber also no strings attached for you to practice your magic with a clear finish over some of the best Aussie Burl I have ever seen. My mate can post from where he lives in Japan. Sure a lot cheaper than from here.
Kind regards Peter.

Hey Peter,
If your neighbours can swing it they should try to get out here to the Izu Penninsula for a little R&R. My wife cooks up some great washoku and our onsen runs 24/7. Burl? Did I hear fine Aussie Burl?? You bet. We'll have to come to some agreement as I'm hardly worthy of the best burls on the planet as a freebee. Talk to you soon.
Cheers,
Chris
