Wattle Sierra
Hi forumites. Here is the result of a short time on the lathe yesterday.
Golden Wattle. 21 coats CA, then Micro Mesh, then brasso.
The kit is an Executive Sierra Chrome kit from Timberbits.
I am pretty pleased with the result overall for a beginner. But in future I will have a pen kit with me next to the lathe so that I know exactly what shape to turn it to. I feel that on this pen, the turned section has a profile which is too curved for the rest of the kit. A flatter turn would have been better. But overall, I'm still fairly happy with it, and I'm sure that someone will love it.
As always, I am keen to hear your feedback and any constructive criticism.
Simon.

Thats looking pretty good Simon.
Getting the curve just right, can be a bit of trial and error until you find what you like best.
I do mine with a slight curve to them, about 1 - 1.5mm bigger in the middle. But I have seen people do much bigger curves, and also flat from bush to bush. Obviously its a matter of personal taste.
Anyway, thats a nice looking bit of timber, and your finish looks good.

You have done a great job on that one - Do you find that using non_traditional timber to give good results...
I used an old rose bush earlier this year and it was supprising how it turned out

Yes I have turned a few pens like that which are not wood that i would normally do woodworking with. I have done an Olive pen. I have blanks waiting to be turned from Mulberry and also Apricot trees. Hopefully they will turn out nice.

I think the shape is just fine, the overall look is quite pleasing and the finish perfect.
