Even more wedding pens!
Hi guys,
So with everyone else doing wedding pens, I told one of my friends to get married so as to give me an excuse to turn some wedding pens myself! Actually that's not true, but they are getting married next week so I took the opportunity.
Both pens are cambridge kits from Brett. One rollerball, one fountainpen. I've only taken a photo of the fountain pen with the cap off and one of them both together.
The blanks are white truestone with gold webbing from Richard at RandB crafts. The photos don't really show the gold webbing correctly. It's come out a bit greenish but in real life they look gold.
Polished to 20000MM.
Thanks for looking :"That's impossible. Nobody can give more than 100%. By definition that is the most anyone can give"

You're right, the gold does look green but have turned that blank before and know they are beautiful when finished. Great pens, you're doing your bit for their special day
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

Two beautiful pens well executed and fab finish. Trustone is not the easiest material to work with and you have hit it on the nail.
I know what you mean about the colour as I have turned that one and the exposure has washed out the gold. It what you see in the hand what matters and I am sure your friend will be very pleased.
My only comment ids the kit itself I think they should get rid of the blacb on the cap CB it distracts form an otherwise beautiful kit

thanks guys. There's something to be said about turning a difficult material and having a real sense of accomplishment at the end of it, and your kind words help me realise that
Sam i totally agree about the black plastic. I think it's only plastic because it's the thread that the pen body screws into, and perhaps in designing it they thought metal on metal wouldn't grab enough, leading to the pen losing its cap far too easily. But i know what you mean. However i'm very happy with the result overall.
I needed to do the fountain pen lid twice as the first one had two small hairline fractures in the material that only became visible when turned down. I suspect this is from when i reamed the hole out for the tube to fit. Which brings me to another point. When the instructions say the cap needs to be drilled 33/64", it's just a tiny bit too tight, hence the reason i reamed it out. They do say this stuff is brittle so care must be taken i guess.
Stay tuned for my next truestone pen, which will be black with gold. From what i understand it's one of the most brittle colours available so it's gonna be a nice little challenge.

Don't think anyone is selling the Truestone in Aus yet, RanB is from the IAP forum. Brett is from Addictive Pens and sells the kits (for this pen)

pens as nice as those makes me think , is anyone putting a makers mark of some kind on their pens , just that in a hundred years time when some of these pens become heirlooms would be nice to know who the maker was , bit like on silver ware , or china ware type thing ,??

texx, i ordered my blanks from r and b crafts. Richard there sells virtually every kind of truestone there is. Be warned. If you look at their website you'll want to spend money richard was excellent to deal with. He worked out a way for me to pay him, was prompt and even sent a bonus bocote blank and his prices are good.
As mentioned, brett is from addictive pens and is wonderful to deal with. He is always a pleasure to do business with, and stocks some very nice kits.
Not sure on the hallmark thing. I've thought about this and the only way i can think of doing it would be to somehow stamp the inside of the brass tube in the cap. No idea how i'd do it though.

Eisbaer
Can imagine the hard work and tricky finishing both needed and involved had you on your toes. The result will grace not only the wedding but their family for a long time.
Your work complements the kit, cast material accented by the gold in it.
Regards Peter.

Lovely pens ,and yes the challenges with these materials make them seem more special in our eyes ,The Black and Gold was the first truestone I did it has a much finer webbing of gold but do look brilliant when finished ,the slower speeds and carbide tools do make these blanks a bit easier to turn on a metal lathe . I know I got some stone blanks off "David" last year called Imperial stone, not on his website ,and has not had time to cut up more blanks yet. Cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!
