Wedding Pens
My first granddaughter is getting married Sunday week, 30th March, and I decide that with my new found interest in pen turning I would make a special set for the bride and groom to sign their certificate.
I didn't know what sort of journey I had embarked on!
Having decided on 2 tone Chrome Sierras and a black an white theme, the search was on for a matching "opposite" set of white and black blanks (if that makes sense!).
Not too much trouble finding a suitable black acrylic blank with white lines, but finding a similar white blank with black lines proved a bit of a headache.
Purchased a silvery opal blank at Carbatec, which was quite nice on its own but not in combination with the black.
Having put out some questions both on this forum and on the IAP forum, I finally found a suitable blank on CSUSA. These duly arrived last Monday, I bought 3 white as well as 3 blacks. Together with some other blanks I had bought, that made a total of 12 blanks purchased for a set of 2 pens (the things you do for your granddaughter, SWMBO was ready to have me certified).
Turned 2 each of the white and the black, as well as some backups for the engraver to practice on.
Delivered these to the engraver on Wednesday for pickup yesterday, Thursday. When I arrived at 3pm yesterday he had neither done a practice one, nor done the proper ones.
Blood pressure on the rise!
Anyway, he was very obliging and did 2 different depth laser engravings on the practice one and put some gold and some silver paste stuff in the engraving to make ir show up.
Having decided to go for the deeper of the 2 and selecting the silver highlighting, he did the engraving on the good ones, exactly where I had marked them with a permanent marker.
I am very happy with the end result, but won't add up the total cost of these 2 pens!

Stunning Big Shed, simply stunning.
Isn't it great when you finally get everything worked out and it all said and done and it looks great? It makes all the hard work just that much sweeter.
I'm sure they will love them, great contrast and compliment between the blanks, love the kit, I've never seen that color of Sierra before.
Good Show mate, you did well!
Wood. Such a wonderful substance.

Congratulation Fred
They are stunning you have come a long way quickly.
The bridge and groom should be very pleased with the fruits of your labours and as for the price quality lasts long after the price is forgotten.
The engraver has done a good job as well.

Now that you've worked out all the kinks, you might have a nice little earner on your hands.
I think I've mentioned before that I pay for my woodworking through my hobby business as a wedding DJ. I see a lot of money paid for weddings, and what you've done here is a very nice item with strong sales potential.
I know these were made with love, not for a price, but have you thought about selling them? I'd be happy to send you details of local wedding publications, web sites, etc. if you decide to test the market with some advertising ... you might even get an article published in the region's wedding magazine
Ron.

Whats wrong with the simple weddings of yesterday, now they have to have matching pens?
More to argue over when the marriage ends....

Brickie, I think you'd be shocked at what gets bought for a lot of weddings. I spend most of my time educating (brainwashing?) my 4yo daughter to elope ... otherwise I'm afraid I'll have to sell both kidneys and a lung to finance her wedding!

Great taste with your work on those special pens.It would emphasise the need to be different beside the obvious colour etc by having them in two boxes that would allow the couple in the future to have their own pens to use however they wish.Viva La Difference.
No cynics need apply in my house where we celebrate 54 yrs of marriage this year, after all my wife comes from Venus whilst I am from Mars.
As a wedding photographer for well over 40 years separate boxes carried by the Best Man and Chief Bridesmaid can avoid that indecent scrabble at the signing time, indeed a wonderful oportunity for the doting Dad to present the pens with his wife at the signing.
All of the effort is worthwhile IMHO.Last month three more GGC brought to 60 of us including my wife and me.
THe use of engraving with infill plus the swirls is special, congrats. Peter

A very thoughtful, handmade gift. Executed with panache. Those are very handsome pens.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.
