Default What's this in my Jack Daniels blank ?

Hi all, I just got around to having a look at starting a JD pen, when drilling the blanks I noticed some lumps under the charcoal and crud coating. I sanded them back a bit and these were revealed. They seem to be on the surface that would have been the outside of the keg.
Do they use wooden nails to hold the hoops in place maybe ?

    Hey Ironwood,

Don't know the construction process, but would like to go over and see (to sample the product) if you could spare the Airfare I reckon I could sort the rest

Seriously doesn't look like a plug, I'd flood it with CA and make it a feature.

I'll check if Tiger fly to Tennessee, and let you know .

Flooding it with CA was my line of thought as well, they wont fully turn away so it should leave a nice feature with a bit of luck.

Hey Ironwood, with the charring of the barrels that is usually on the inside. maybe the board was damaged when originally cut and the y corked the timber and then charred it. you can always send it to me and see if it will stand up to quality control. You are lucky to get it will come up looking good I think

I think you will find that what you have is the part where the head fits in the stave it is called the croze

I posted this same question over on the IAP, the general consensus was that they are wedges that are driven into knotholes and bark inclusions, to stop the whisky leaking out.
Aparently they are on the inside face, when the staves are bent for the curve of the barrel it makes their fit even tighter.

Yep that would be my guess. i have seen some doco's on pay TV about how they make the barrels and there are no wooden nail used.
Love to see it when finished should be good

They are Dutchman plugs, used to fill defects in the oak before charring…the defect is cut out with a straight chisel in the stave before the barrel is built, plugs are a little wedge hammered into the cut, and they are there to keep the whiskey from getting in and behind the char through a defect like a small knothole, birdshot hole or bug hole.
By the way, Jack Daniels only uses their barrels once; they sell them used to other distilleries and overseas to a scotch maker in Wales.
I think the makers of Canadian Mist also buys the used barrel, the whiskey soaked char imparts part of its orange/caramel color to the Canadian blend.

    Thanks for that insight Ed.

Not sure if I am lucky or unlucky, guess I'll find out for sure when i get around to turning it.
Hopefully it will be a nice feature and talking point.
