    One thou passes are possible.
Do you use a flat bevel on your skew ?
I sharpen on the grinder but hone with a diamond plate.
I start having trouble maintaining a steady cut after too many hones and I start getting too wide a flat edge near the cutting edge.

My experience is the same. Concave grind as I use the Tormek and flat diamond plates. I generally hone until the time it takes to hone a really keen edge is more than a few passes each side, then its back to the Tormek.

But its horses for courses, I only do that for fine spindle tasks. Different story for the skew when I'm using it for roughing down stock, sharp enough to do the job.

Yep, sounds like we are on the same page.
