White Oak Closed End
Bet ya'll been thinkin'....ah, he forgot how to cut wood, spin it, and finish it?
Even if you guys/gals haven't been thinking this, I have! Finally dispatched all those PR Bottle Stopper blanks the wife had poured....but I will be in trouble Wednesday when her four gallons of PR shows up!
These pieces of White Oak were set aside while I was cutting up blanks last fall...although each one was too short to be sold as a full 5-1/4" blank, I figured I could made get something out of them....just too purty to throw away!
Think each one got 7-8 coats mediumCA, and then I sanded through all the pretty colored pads, and touched it with some MacGuire's PlastixPolish. Before the finish was applied, sanded 400, 800, and then EEE'd it...
Of course, special thanks to Rick for the closed-end pin chucks! These ROCK!
Pen will be given away on Groundhogs Day!!(Nope, this ain't my PITH pen)
Scott (critique it please) B

Well done hehe, and like riding a bike once learned never forgotten ,may have some initial wobbles but soon comes back, and you have learned no wood is useless ,I often buy shorts of nice stuff as many kits only need a half blank , those look pretty damn fine to me ,the only bit of white oak I have turned came from a distillary where they usr the American white oak for the giant storage vats, interesting grain, but nothing like you are showing here . Cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

Nice work, thats a great looking pen.
The shape, fit and finish would look good with even a plain wood, but that piece of Oak really sets it apart.

Thanks everyone....I too often become amazed by the prices of some pieces. But White Oak is so overlooked that it is cheap(sometimes so cheap that people won't even purchase it, thinking it's a dud).
The shape seems to please most that look at it in person, but I'm always thinking it needs a bigger 'flare' on the closed end.... Then again, I'm my own most critic, never happy with anything I make(you know what I mean).
Scott (wow, that grain is in there) B
