I can't help with the mandrel, but I use a whiteside pen mill and it's a very nice bit of gear. Simple tool, but it's well thought out - even the case is excellent and makes life easier.

Doesn't look any different from this

CWS Store - Woodfast ER Collet Pen Mandrel

    but twice the price.

I prefer to use the Vermec or Vicmarc collet chuck with a set of ER25 collets, these canbe used for a lot more than holding just a mandrel.

I bought one of these mandrels a couple of years ago, and highly recommenced it.

    New Mandrel Design?

I found the ones like the woodfast mandrel are a pain in the having to tighten and loosening all the time, they should have been left on Noah arc.

Hi Mark good to see you still are floating about.
I bought ne of these many years ago (6 or 7) and found it to fantastic but is showing it age and starting to get a wobble in it I think due to wear. I might see if he still makes them.
I will be down your way soon but no chance to call in as we will turning left at threeways.

Looks like a similar principle to what I use, the dayacom from GPW:

    Dayacom Pen Mandrel Saver Kit

I have no experience with other mandrels but I've been happy with it so far!

I am with Fred (Big shed) I cannot see why in the world you would pay around the $70 mark for that mandrel when the ajustable one that is used by many seems just as good if you ask me. I have also purchase several of the GPW Dayacom mandrel and saver sets and they work out great. once again $65 for a saver is a bit steep in my opinion. Yes I believe they could be much better buter with the mandre and mandrel saver you have been talking about you would be looking a about $135 ( OUCH)

    Cheers Ian

I wont be going any where for the next few years, if you can drop in you will notice that the shed has shrunk noticeably, must have been the rain we had in the wet season. If you want to break your trip drop in for a coffee.
I will PM you my email address.

Is the milled part on the shaft still flat?
Only other thing I can think of is the locating pin the Morse taper has worn and shouldn't be too hard to replace.
Does your wife still compete in Alice?

I understand what you are saying mark but it has en better days and a upgrade would be good. I spoke to Les and he as made some improvements to his design so I'm keen to see what is like now.
And SWMBO has hung up her belt for now but I believe she will be returning next year.
