WIP Pens for our customers
I manage a Cypress Sawmill in SE QLD and have decided to make some Cypress Pens for our customers. Its been about 7 years since i did any turning. I dusted off the old Hafco Lathe and promptly broke the variable speed pully so this was all the excuse I needed to buy a vicmarc. Anyway long story short I got a VL 150 and have started on the pens. A few pics of the progress and the forst finished Sierra. I am very happy with it, sanded to 600 with sandpaper then with the coloured pads to 12000 Finished with 10 coats of CA. Just have to fine tune the sanding as I can see some fine sanding marks.

My greatest fear is when I die wifey will sell my tools for what I said I paid for them.

Turned a few more this week, loving the different grain patterns. Learning a lot along the way. Finishing is getting better, probably need to work on photography skills though.

you picked a great lathe, it looks like it must be related to mine, possibly brothers
the pens have a bit of character with the two toned wood, well done, have you tried cross cut or angle cut, might give that little bit extra chacter
all the best

Very nice work Even better given you haven't turned a pen for 7 years. I like the timber. Is it possible to get some from your sawmill?

How about putting some of that wood up for sale?

Cypress Pine can give some amazing results as the colour
and grain variations are great.
No need to travel great distances to get the wood either
... just go to Bunnings and buy one of their fence pickets
for about $1.20. Plenty to choose from and you can get
many blanks from the one picket.
