    Default Wood drying

    Hi All

A friend has given me some small pieces from a River Red Gum to turn into pens. The tree was cut do.wn in August and wood has been drying naturally since then. The peices are about 2 cm thick and appear dry (they are from the outer edge of tree). Any ideas how long it will take to dry out to be suitable for pen blanks? I have looked in the search engine but not found the answer. With any luck I should get some bigger pieces for bowls in a little while.

This can be a somewhat vexing problem ,akin to how long is a piece of string . But for some interesting facts on some of the processes have a look here , Some have used a micro wave oven and a plastic bag for a few seconds at a time , weigh the wood first accurately and then weigh each time to see if the weight is decreased (usually condenses in the bag) I use a cheap moisture meter when in doubt or I remember to use it . You can turn wood green dry or in between , what you are looking for is stability,eg won't crack or otherwise alter too much . Generally the wood for a pen ends up as a very thin veneer so drilling turning sanding polishing all tends to dry it out pretty well any way. Me I would just try one bit and see what happens . I am sure some other good advise in this area will be forthcoming ,cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

What John said. If you do a good glue up it can still be a bit. To much time in the oven will split the wood.
